Anyone here do 12 hour shifts? As opposed to 8hr days.

Was wondering is you like the 12’s or hate them? And why.

I worked 12 hours shifts  (Tours) in the Oilfield for many of the  43 years I worked in the Oilfields all over the world before I retired effective 1-Feb-21.

All you do is work.  If Offshore - you get off Tour and clean up and eat at the Galley and have  a couple hours maybe...if not working overtime.  As a Construction Superintendent  Offshore, I had daily meetings at end of the day and then reports to do at the end of  the day and I rarely ate at the Galley as I would eat in my office.  By the time all that is done you will put in 14 to 15 hours per day.  Sleep abit and get up and do it again for at least 28 days straight.  Many times I worked over and one year I was Offshore 9 months of the year.

I worked 12 hour Tours onshore and it was tough to make a drive to/from work.  But you do it  as it is your job.

I was gone working either offshore  and overseas or when on land I left early and came in late.  I did not get to spend much time with my kids and I regret that to this day.  But I had to make a living and support ms gamboolgal and the kids.  So it is what we did.  But I do regret being gone so much.

If you can get oversea's and work  28/28 that is the best I ever had it in 43 years.  You will actually be at work  and in transit for 30 to  31 days but then  you will have 26 to 25 days off and you can really spend a good amount of time with the family.  I only  worked 28/28 for about 5 years and it was the best I ever had it.

It helps tremendously  to have a supportive wife.  I did and it is the only way you can be gone so much.  I have seen many marriages fail in the Oilfield....

12 hour days leave no time for family.  But if that is your job then that is what you have to do.  At least for me that was the way it was.

I have been working 12 hour night shifts for about almost 4 years now.  I like them as I get more days off.  Each pay period is 2 weeks and we have two different lines we rotate between.  (4 On 4 Off 3 On 4 Off) then opposite (4 Off 4 On 3 Off 4 On) for the next line.  So it looks like

12hr - 12hr - 12hr - 8hr - Off - Off - Off - Off - 12hr - 12hr - 12hr - Off - Off - Off

Off - Off - Off - Off - 12hr - 12hr - 12hr - Off - Off - Off - 8hr - 12hr - 12hr - 12hr

So once a month we get 7 days off in a row.  Its like a week of leave a month that cost us no leave days.  If you pick the correct leave week (your 3 day work week) you end up with 14 days off with only using 3 days of leave.

Only downside is once a month, you have a 7 day work stretch.

I mean I must like it because there are others shifts available to bid to each year and I keep picking this shift....

We've been on 12s for about 5 years now. Long week is 4 12s, 40 regular, and 5 OT, 3 comp time. Short week is 3 12s, then burn 4 hours, using the comp time earned on the other week, (3 comp OT is 4.5 hours), and bank a 1/2 hour of comp time. People like me instead burn 4 hours of annual leave, (vacation time - I earn more than I use for the pay period), and get the 8 OT as all cash. You work basically half the month, with 3 and 4 day weekends. The long week blows, but the days off are nice.

I've done 12 hour shifts at two different departments. I enjoy it because you only work 14 days a month and always have days off during the week to do stuff. We work 40 hrs every 2 weeks and get one 8 hour shift during that time.

Three 12s and one 4.  The 4 hour day is optional of you have benefit time.  The 12s can become a kick in the nuts if you get a late call and have to be back the next day.

But if it’s a very slow dept it could be ok.

We had a permanent 12hr shift for several years until someone filed a grievance and management retaliated by putting us back on rotating eights.

Our work week was Monday through Friday.  6:30a-6:30p for day shift, 6:30p-6:30a for night shift.
Week one:  You worked Mon-Tue, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Week two:  You worked Wed, Thu.
repeat
the other platoon had the reverse days.
The LT in charge of days or nights had the best schedule, they were off every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, every week.  Unless a SGT needed to take a weekend off.

so 84 hr work period (2 weeks).  We agreed to no overtime and every six weeks, we'd get an additional day off.  Most of the senior guys took a Friday, Saturday or Sunday so they wouldn't have to work 3 in a row.
I and most younger guys took a Wednesday or Thursday as the extra day off, so every 6 weeks, I'd burn 12 hours of time and be off seven days in a row.

It was perfect.

As I said, we're on rotating eights, it sucks.  We rotate every 28 days.  From thirds (10:30p-6:30), to seconds (2:30p-10:30p) to first (6:30a-2:30p), repeat.  Days off moved with each rotation.  Yep, we're being punished.
I can retire in 356 days, 18 hrs, 47 mins.

We work 12's on the panama rotation (which is the shift that you mentioned OP). Love em, every other three day weekend off, short week only work two days. When I was in special units and the DB we either worked 10's or 8's. 8hr shift are my least favorite.

This is what ours look like.  You get to pick your 8 hour day based in seniority.

I loved it on nights, but on days it sucked when having small kids.  I would leave before they got up, and got home in time for them to get ready for bed.  I worked 12 hrs days last year for a while and really enjoyed it.  days off are more frequent, and you can get a whole week off by burning 2-3 days depending on how you play it. You spend twice as much on gas driving to work more frequently as well.

They do free up a lot of time for side jobs or to cover shifts on OT.  I only worked about 6 months last year due to an injury and still made just under $100K.  Plus a few grand in side jobs.

Im back on 8s this year and really don't like them......

8 hour shifts but  Isign up for blocks of 12 hours of OT or even 16...

On week number 5 of filling my weekends with 24hrs of OT.

Being on 5 8's, if I am gonna do 12 hours then I want every second of it to be overtime.  Hate a 12 hour day with 8hrs straight time and only 4 hrs OT.  Not worth it.

So I am currently 5 weeks without a day off but 48 hrs OT per pay period.

If my 8s turned to 12s I would likely be 3 on with 4 off followed by 4 on with 3 off.

That would give me the chance to have more 12s with an equal number of days as OT versus straight time.  Would be like 84 hrs of OT per pay period versus current 48...

So from a certain point of view/logic, 12s make more sense.

12 hour shifts, 7 days a week for 6 weeks. But then you get a nice 6 week vacation.

When I was still a patrol officer before I went to the Darkside and became a fed we did a pilot program. At the time we were doing eight hour shifts, seven days a week with days off varying between two and four depending on where you fit in the schedule. Then  we decided to experiment with 10 and 12 hour shifts. The majority of the force wanted to go to  four 10 hour shifts as it seemed to make most people happier. The 12 hour shift schedule we experimented with was three days on, two days off and then two days on, three days off. Which isn’t terrible but because lots of us would pick up a last minute DUI or some late time-consuming call like that that would keep you there for an hour or two after the end of your shift (those days became long quickly), thus with us on the street at least the 10 hour shift was preferable. Of course management decided to say fuck it and we’re going to keep our eight hours per day seven day per week on schedule. Most folks I talked to in the state and local small world really love their 10 hour shifts.

Worked 12s for a while day and night.  If you’re busy it wears on you. The longest stretch was 3 days, and after those three 12s I would feel worse physically at the end of day 5 of a 10 hour rotation.

Those two hours make a difference when getting sleep and having family time. You also burn less leave per day off. Now I work five on four off ten hour shifts. I like it a lot.

I've worked a lot of fucked up schedules for places that require 24/7 manning.  Swapping between 8s during the week, 12s on the weekend, different shifts every week. shit like that.

for 2 years now i've been on 3 12s a week, plus an 8 every 2 weeks.  Swap between days and nights every 3 months.

I absolutly love it.

My average work week is between 70-96hrs so yea I work alot of 12s.

That said I do contract work so I might do 13 on 1 off with 12 hr says for 6weeks then have down time between the next contract

I'm currently on a 12hr sift now and have been for a week. I wouldnt work 12hr shifts without decent over time though 20hrs or more and 12s are worth it. 5 12s and off two days is the dream schedule. 60hr weeks are awesome. Granted I usually only get them working 6 10s

Having spent years working the Pittman schedule (every day first week except W and Th, second week only work W and Th), I have to say it sucks after a while IMO. You lose track of what day it is anymore, and never really have enough down time to recover.

My current team tried the Pittman for a few months, then unanimously declared it to suck, and we adopted a semi-permanent schedule: you either work M-W every week, or F-Su every week, and alternate Th. So one week I have three days off in a row, then four on..the next week it's only three work days and four days off in a row.

The downside is that you get stuck (for a few months at a time) either working every weekend or never working weekends. The upshot is having 4 days off in a row every pay period. That first day off can be a recovery day, and then you have 3 days to unwind...

We do 12’s. It’s awesome when our “long break” comes around. Those 7 days off are sweet.

Fri night, Sat night, Sun night, Mon night

Tues off, Wed off, Thurs off

Fri day, Sat day, Sun day

Mon off

Tues night, Wed Night, Thurs night

Fri off, Sat off, Sun off

Mon day, Tues day, Wed day, Thurs day

Fri off, Sat off, Sun off, Mon off, Tues off, Wed off, Thurs off

Repeat for the entire year

I work as a Corrections Officer and at the facility here we are so short staffed that we work 16 hour shifts and our only time off we get is if we had PTO already scheduled, or on our off shift mandated day, you call in (as they will usually overlook that because of the short staffing).  I've gone 21 days straight now and only had my two PTO days I took for my step-son's 21st birthday.

12’s mean I get more useful time with my family.
One week I work Mon, Tues, off Weds, Thurs, work Fri, Sat, & Sun.
Following week I work Weds & Thurs, and I’m off Mon, Tues, Fri, Sat, & Sun.
I get 2 weekends off a month.

On 8’s I worked 6 days in a row on, 2 days off, 6 on, 2 off, finally work 6 on three off…one weekend a month, and have an afternoon shift from 230p-1030p, so I basically dont get to see my family for 1/3 of the year.

12’s are the best thing going on a rotating shift.

48’s are better, but I’m not a FF, so…

Understaffed here too. Still on 8’s. Constant mandates. 8 hour shifts. Mandates are a burn out.
Rotating days off. Short weeks and long weeks. 2-4 days off.
4 days off always Fri-Mon.
6-2-6-2-6-3-5-4-5-3

4 x 12’s doesn’t sound bad.

We did 12 hours day 5 days a week with 2 off.  By the fifth day we were getting fuzzed.  Our team did it for about 2 months.  It sucked but if we did 4 12 hour days with 4 days off and 4 ,12 with 3 days off.

I worked 24 on 48 off, with 3 week kelly days, and 10 vacation days per year...  I put all of my vacation days next to a kelly day, and took a nice little extended vacation every 3 weeks. (Well... ALMOST every 3 weeks).
Could not imagine working any other schedule than that.

Retired just over a year ago, though...so NOW I have the ULTIMATE work schedule!

3-12s for over 20 years.
Wouldn’t work 8s for 50% more money and have turned down better paying positions that were 5-8s.
8 hour days just fuck up your day.

And because of how short staffed the department is, it's basically 16 hour (double) shifts on 3 or all 4 days on AND getting ordered to work on the days off.

12hr shifts:  6A-6P & 6P-6A
3 on/4off; 4 on/3 off - Friday is the flex day
3 12s is easy, 4th 12 is an ass kicker. 12s really suck if you have any kind of commute - no time to do anything on work days when at least two hours are drive time.

Night shift sucks because you truly are opposite normal people so not any real overlap with family.

I had been a Cadillac dealer tech for 35 years normal 8 to 9 hr days.
My wife had cancer and was on her last leg of the battle.
Friends of mine "manager" of a Saturn dealership have been trying to get me there for a long time.
I got a call and was told they are going to a 3 12 hr workweek.
I couldn't pass it up 4 days a week to spend with my wife.

It took a little while to adjust but was well worth it.
If I was still working I would do again in a heart beat.

Keep the same sleep schedule and you will be fine.  It has the greatest effect on the guys that try to flop their sleep every time they have a day off.  I loved nights.  Everyone was in bed by 2300 and I had the house to myself. I remodeled 2/3 of my last house on mids, while the family slept!

We work 12 hour shifts in a Panama schedule on road patrol.  I worked 8s and 12s in a variety of schedules in the military and I prefer 12s with more days off.

We do the Pittman as well, it’s nice on the two day work weeks.  We tend to be busy at the end of shift (6a-6p) so I seem to work closer to 13 a lot of days.
