I have an FAL and a Socom II M1A. Really love them both. Seriously not sure which one I'd pick if I could only have 1. Socom damn fun to shoot. FAL so smooth. Really can't go wrong with either one. View Quote My Austrian STG has the smoothest action by far of any semi-auto I've ever felt. Especially for a military rifle. |

Favorite? FAL
Best? AR10 (or any other properly made 7.62*51 ARs) |

Tough call. I think the SCARS are more versitile but my FAL is select fire so it's a lot of fun too(and it just keeps on running). If I'm heading out the door due to SHTF I'll grab my SCARS; the accuracy, lighter weight and optics mounting ability just makes them our go to guns. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I really like both my SCAR 17's and my FAL. Also have several other 308 hunting/target shooting rifles. My HK91 rarely gets fired anymore. Which do you like better , Scar or FAL? Tough call. The JP LRP-07. It's fit and finish are outstanding, it shoots half moa or better, and I've put it through hell on long range shooting courses and it hasn't let me down. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/rolex/10178109_10203901800731787_5253741593441431498_n_zpsqff6mpcc.jpg View Quote What is that wrapped around the suppressor and why? |

I have no experience with them, but I really hope to get a GII DPMS .308 at some point

As much nostalgia as is associated with the M1A, the truth is that the AR-10 and its variants are superior in every single way. If I were in the market for a semi auto 308, that's where I'd be looking. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

My 5.56 collection is GTG so I'm looking at buying a 308/7.62 rifle, primarily for fun and just curious what everyone's favorite is. I was thinking something semi-auto and mag fed.... Like this Springfieldd M1A Socom 16 http://www.springfield-armory.com/products/m1a-socom-16/ Probably put a low powered scope on it and a light weight bipod. But i'm open to all ideas as I have never owner or even fired a 308 before so I dont really know whats out there. As much nostalgia as is associated with the M1A, the truth is that the AR-10 and its variants are superior in every single way. If I were in the market for a semi auto 308, that's where I'd be looking. Reliability, durability, adjustable gas block for different types of ammo, piston system like most military rifles have ? Yeah, I'll take my FAL. |

KAC SR25 (or clone) or LMT MWS. they are boringly reliable. For fun, I like either a FAL or a G3 clone.

This is correct. The heat from the suppressor disturbs my visual field when I'm looking through the glass. |

I'm happy with my 25 year old M1a, stupid accurate even with me at the trigger. A keeper.
My FN FAL did great first time at the range too, but the second time it recoiled way too much for some unknown (to me) reason. The 3 I had CETMEs sucked generally, accuracy and just not reliable. |

Using a cheap harbor freight infrared thermometer, my suppressed .308 will heat the tip of my AAC 762SD to 150F after 6 fairly slow fire rounds. That's when the mirage starts in dead air. |

I have owned a FAL, M1A, G3, and AR-10. Out of all of them the only ones I still own are the M1A and AR-10, with the AR-10 being my all time favorite. For years the Armalite AR-10 was the only 308 variant of the AR and mags were expensive, now everyone makes one, I have a Sig 716 which takes Magpul mags.

M1A standard--I like the long classic looks and the wood stock.

FAL or HK91/G3 if you are old school, SCAR 17 if you are a 14'er.
The G3 will beat the fuck out of you if there's a knot in your tampon string, but by all means do feel free to beat the fuck out of it in return. It truly won't care. Without a doubt one of the most indestructible combat rifles ever. |

The good news, OP, is that you have plenty of great options! I've shot SCAR 17s. Very nice. And 91s. I love most H&K products. I own one M1A (a "Loaded" model with minor upgrades). It's my "flashback" rifle since I was issued an M14 long ago. And I have four FALs, any of which I would bet my life on. But I have five early AR10s (the machine gun shown below and four semi-autos, including one scoped "sniper" variant), and they are, far and beyond, my favorite .308s. Unfortunately, their age and the scarcity of spare parts would prevent me from picking them as my SHTF rifle...probably. :) http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w407/Ol_JMB97/IMG_1064_zps194bb03c.jpg~original On the other hand, the rifle I usually shoot the most is whatever one I most recently purchased, and I just picked up a lightly-used M&P 10 last weekend. The PRS and TangoDown bipod are coming off to get the weight back down, but the more useful upgrades (Geissele SSA-E trigger and Raptor CH to keep it fully ambidextrous) will stay, and I've mounted a Bushnell 6500 Elite Tactical 2.5-16. Right now I'm testing ammo to see what it likes--just getting to know it--but for this week, at least, it's my most fun .308. (A feeling which will probably last till I buy thenext one--whatever that might be.) Lightweight, relatively inexpensive and far more accurate than I generally have any need for. What more could you want? http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r500/AR10er/WP_20150831_002_zpsjqmqus27.jpg View Quote The AR-10 is beautiful! |

For precision use, Larue OBR. For more generalized use, I would build a DPMS based 308 AR with a 16" barrel.

You wanna see something pretty cool? I shot this a few years ago. It's the funnest 7.62 NATO gasser I've ever shot, hands down, and I've shot quite a few different battle rifles from around the world. This is an integrally suppressed AR10, no BS. Shooting standard M118 special ball through it was almost like subs quiet. It was beautiful, smooth, just plain fun to shoot. I'll have to upload the video some time. http://soldiersystems.net/blog1/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/IMG_8201.jpg http://soldiersystems.net/blog1/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/IMG_8200.jpg View Quote That's a beautiful piece. |

SCAR17S.
I've owned the M1A1, Armalite AR10, and a DS Arms FAL, I prefer the SCAR17S. |

I'm not a 90 pound wuss but have fired thousands upon thousands of rounds from G3/AK4/HK91s with early and late para and fixed stocks and don't find the recoil bad at all.
The only bad thing I have to say about the gun is the weight bias but it does help keep the muzzle on target. I love the things. I like my Brazilian FAL as well but not quite as much as my own HK91. I've never fired an AR-10 but don't care for the M14 all that much. I would rather have a MAS-49/56 than the M-14. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
