If people do this enough, the gov is going to blackmail microsoft into creating a virus that affects people who don't install the spying updates.

Companies acting deliberately against their own interests, and even trying to hide it from consumers, shows they are being coerced by the government. Microsoft execs are no doubt under a gag order. Same with GM putting cameras in their new cars.

Don't like the idea of being data mined, don't care enough to change my habits. For those that say Linux is best because it is open source, care to explain why no one caught the heartbleed bug? Hell even Truecrypt never fully had its code reviewed.

Uhhh Heartbleed WAS discovered and fixed.  Open Source doesn't guarantee zero bugs (nor does it claim to do so).

And Truecrypt did have a code audit performed, and nothing seriously wrong was discovered.

How long until heartbleed was found was my question. Often people just think because something is open source its fine, but with code that's millions of lines long, its pretty hard to find malicious stuff that's purposely hidden.

I have not installed those updates on my older Windows 7 laptop. My newer Dell is dual boot, Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.04. I only use Windows for Office, all my surfing is done on Linux.

If you have done a Windows Update in the last couple of months you probably have the patches already installed.  Search by KB number and use the release date to help you find the patch to uninstall them.  Here are the patch numbers as referenced in the OP's article.

How does one uninstall these updates ore even know if they've been installed already?

Not overly computer savvy, just know enough to be dangerous

Goto control panel under security and windows update and you can see a list of installed updates, and then uninstall them, I had one of the 4 installed earlier this month. You can also turn off automagic updates here too.

Which ones specifically? They all look similar but with different numbers after them

Some are security Others just say Windows Update & a hotfix is in there too

Thanks! I found the first two on that list. Searched and scrolled through about 5 times for the other two but they weren't there.

Thanks to you computer guys.

It kind of goes both ways. The shellshock bug (a VERY serious security flaw) was present in bash since 1989. All of those eyes on the code, and nobody noticed a pretty serious problem until 2014.

But on the other hand, it was fixed (in the source code anyway) VERY quickly once discovered. Like practically immediately, which is nice.

I've long wondered how many blackhats knew about it for years, and never said shit.

If I had to guess, I bet a few more people than just blackhats knew about it.

If any of you guys really want to geek out on this Windows 10 thing, here are a couple of links to check out.  The second one even has an uninstall script that will remove the Windows 10 upgrade and the telemetry patches.
