I'm guessing the majority of people would be buying a 4k display before an Ocular Rift + Robotic Real Doll setup. Not to say there are people that won't buy the latter, but the former can be far more easily "justified". A trip to Newegg or Best Buy for a 4k display vs. an adult "book store" for the full VR setup. Kind of hard to make that second one into a business expense. Especially now that people are used to 500+ dpi on their phones, they'll want the same crispness on what they use every day (the Mac Philosophy). |

Ads targeting people who view porn ie single men.
Dating ads, grow your Pen 15 ads, gambling ads. All are so competative and loaded with cash that it only takes a few people clicking on them to make serious money. Plus there are other ways of making money from free content. Offering paid subscription where everything is the same but without the ads for instance... |

Most of these free porn sites are all owned by the same company - MindGeek. They own pornhub, youporn, tube8, etc. They also own brazzers, reality king, mofo, etc. and they handle the online stuff for wicked and playboy.
Most of their revenue comes from cams and dating, apparently (notice that they've all got links for camshows and dating at the top). That's where a much smaller group of users will keep pouring money in. Almost certainly the sportscaster guy that racked up a 10K bill was not buying subscriptions to porn sites, he was probably paying for camshows. The premium sites don't make a lot of money but the costs aren't massive and they cover themselves. Those premium sites then supply content that's 6-9months old to the tube sites making their running costs incredibly low. They don't make a lot of money from ad revenue but they can cover their costs. What they do generate is an enormous volume of pass-through traffic and a tiny percentage of those users will end up at the cam or dating sites which is where the real money comes from. It's like fremium games (or taxes) - most users will pay nothing or a very small amount. The bulk of the revenue comes from a very small subset of users. |

HD makeup is a big deal now because of it, to the point there's specific multi-week makeup classes devoted to just HD video specifically. I actually finished one recently, and it's amazing the things a calibrated monitor picks up that the naked eye would miss. |

Porn has always made or broken a new medium, or kept a medium going until it could find a popular audience.
Porn kept post-civil war photography going until canister film came along. Porn kept early film alive at the turn of the century and sold many Super 8 projectors into the 1970s. Porn kept many drive in movie theaters and marginal theaters alive in the 1970s. I recall a neighborhood theater in a residential area of Manhattan that played regular movies most of the time, porn on Saturday night, and a "Greek show" on Sunday afternoon (no, not anal, but some Greek language movies and shorts for the Hellenic community). VCRs would not have caught on were it not for porn, and they led to DVDs. 1 900 numbers were the crossroad between porn and the newly de-regulated phone industry. And all of us are young enough to grasp that porn paid for the early internet. |

Porn is a Massive, MASSIVE business. It has it's own industry infrastructure/supply chain, banking, industry award system and critical review and with that come its "connoisseurs". Interviews with employees who've been caught with porn on company resources show there's software for organizing, categorizing and hiding the stuff, some of the more hard-core stuff was collected because at some point, the individual just couldn't enjoy or "get-off" on regular old porn anymore. They needed something "different" or more "exotic" to satisfy. Weirdest porn stash I've ever seen hidden on company resources was stored on a Xerox printer's memory via the on-board ftp server.
My first job out of school was with a start-up ISP and I worked nights where this one guy would always come in every month at 10PM to pay for his co-lo sever with cash. He ran a website that specialized in BBW (big beautiful woman) porn. It was his only source of income and at the time, '95 he said he was making around $70,000 a year off of it. Evidently the speciality porn: gay, tranny, scat, BBW, etc. is where the money is. |
