Forge welding. only way to go for real men. if it was good enough for the ancient Egyptians, by Osiris it oughta be good enough for us.

This is not an easy thing that do, it must have taken 50-60 trys to get it fused, only took break shortly thereafter.  Finally I had to find an older then dirt farmer to show me what I was doing wrong...

Tig is the best welding

Auto darkeners don't like being dropped.
Nor do they like extreme cold as in negative degrees.
And some are quite position sensitive about arc to sensor.
You are not a welder if you can't weld with a standard hood. You are a guy that can weld under the right circumstances.

are YOU a welder?

So you, personally, can weld 100 feet under water, with no lights,   right now?

This was my hood a couple years ago, doing some off shore rig repair work.
Didn't have an auto lens setup because of  all the arc gouging, auto lenses suck for gouging.

Forge weld.

Oxy/acetylene gas weld.

Stick welding is for beginners

That's how most of the welding is done here in the oil patch.

You can't weld outdoors in a breeze with a mig.

He should go weld on the pipeline.

I was being a smart@$$.  I have done a lot of stick welding.  I worked my way through college as a millwright building farm and commercial grain handling systems. MIG is fine for thin material.  It won't penetrate like a stick on something like large tractor hitches.  I did a poor job of trying to make the point that no one form of welding is perfect for everything.  It seems that some of the younger guys think that MIG and TIG will do everything.

This.

Stick and TIG welding is how it's done if you have any sense.

Wire feed is for building dumpsters and stuff that crack-heads can build...

I had two years of welding in high school in the early 80's. They taught stick and gas, someone would get hurt in just about every class.

Do they still offer welding in high school today?

Nope. Can't have anyone learning any useful skills now, can we?

Is that what it's come to now?      It's been since 01, since I've done any serious stick welding/heavy fab work, but it used to be the pipeliners that loved to boast.   Wanna piss of a pipeliner?    Tell them that a Miller is better than a Lincoln, or a 5P sucks.

Anymore, about all I do is TIG aircraft parts.

I'm not a welder by any means more like a guy who can weld in certain situations.  Yesterday I welded for the first time in at least a couple of years.  It is amazing how out of practice I am.  I guess welding is kind of like shooting in that if you aren't doing it often your skill diminishes quite a bit.  I made some nasty bird poo looking welds yesterday

Very true.     I know I'm out of practice with stick, but I don't do it like I used to.  Me and my dad are always messing with each other over it.   He still stick welds a lot and is damn good at it,  but hasn't TIG welded in years.  Vise versa for me.    I'll run a kick ass TIG bead, and he'll ask "how about stick?".    When he runs some bitchin stick beads, I'll ask "how about TIG?"

But, I gotta give it to the old man.  He was a great teacher, and taught me well.

Took this earlier today.  it's my wife sitting at the console of the weld tool that I have been running lately. it does both Conventional friction stir welding and self reacting friction stir welding.

I have worked in Fab shops, construction, Military, and Aerospace and i'll take aerospace any day of the week.  Cake!

Going to get poo pooed by the pro's BUT hard to beat oxy/act for all around in the middle of nowhere anti zombie fab or getting big ass machinery sound again

Learning oxy-act should be done before TIG IMO..

Hell it was the first thing we learned in metal shop.. It teaches you a lot about how molten metal acts.
