I remember thinking this was the funniest movie I ever saw but after finding the trailer I’m thinking I must have been high or drunk as fuck at the time…

Silent running had great potential but Bruce Dern is the worst actor who ever got multiple chances to ruin movies.

It is easy to see where the idea for R2D2 came from.

"Silent Runnings"? is that "On a Bobsled In Space No One Can Hear You Scream" movie?

That is good movie, not really in space though.

lots of good suggestions that i hadn't considered.  watched all of firefly/serenity last week, and saw the martian a couple of months ago.  can quote almost all of the 5th element from memory.

pandorum is exactly the kind of suggestion i was looking for--an under-the-radar flick--but i watched that a while back also.

think i'll go with event horizon.  haven't seen that since the theater.

Honestly?  Buy Kerbal Space Program and actually learn some basics of spaceflight.  It's amazing how little I understood and still don't understand about it.

Good flick.

Another vote for "Moon" (2009) here. The movie features a typically fantastic performance by Sam Rockwell. Also, a note about the film's director Duncan Jones. He's David Jones' son. Well, the David Jones that changed his stage name to "David Bowie," that is.

I was going to post the trailer, but I think even that has too many spoilers in it. So, watch the movie without watching any of the trailers. Here's the movie poster instead.

type 'ss' in front of 'youtube' to download videos.

example:
go to the video's page www.youtube.com/myVideo  >type> www.ssyoutube.com/myVideo (click enter)

This links you to another site where it will convert and allow you to download an MP4

If you want just the audio mp3 >> www.listentoyoutube.com copy/paste url into the field box provided...

Other than the previously mentioned Outland (Sean Connery), Aliens, and Event Horizon, I'll suggest the following:

"The Dark Side of the Moon" (Robert Sampson) an interesting, but, difficult to find movie about a crew in space coming across an old, long lost space shuttle that has something inhuman aboard.
"The Puppet Masters"  (Donald Sutherland/Eric Thal/Julie Warner) Sci-Fi story written by Robert Heinlein about a different kind of alien invaders.
"Day the Earth Stood Still"     the original classic movie starring Michael Rennie, not the Keannu Reeves crapfest.
"War of the Worlds"   the original classic, not the Tom Cruise crapfest.
"Battle: Los Angeles"  starring Aaron Eckhart. Much better war movie with US Marines v. Alien invaders than "Independence Day."
"Halo 4 Forward Unto Dawn"  movie based on some video game that I know nothing about. The movie was pretty good. About a world (not sure if Earth or not) is invaded by aliens in surprise attack.
"It! The Terror from Beyond Space"  (Marshall Thompson) Popcorn type sci-fi action film about explorers to Mars that are killed off and a rescue ship comes and a hidden creature boards the ship.
"This Island Earth"  (Jeff Morrow/Faith Domergue)  Classic Sci-fi movie about aliens coming to Earth to kidnap/recruit scientists to assist their war against another alien race.
"The Quatermass Xperiment"  (Brian Donlevy)  Scientist sends the first ship into space and it crash lands missing 2 of the 3 astronauts. The one astronaut has an alien infection.
"Life Force"  (Steve Railsback/ Patrick Stewart/ directed by Tobe Hooper)  Haley's Comet approaches Earth with an alien space ship in tow. Earth sends up astronauts to investigate.
"Journey to the Far Side of the Sun" (Roy Thinnes) A new planet has been discovered on the opposite side of the Sun and an astronaut is sent to investigate. Kind of like a Twilight Zone episode/movie.

Very 80's and very much for kids, BUT... I watched that again after more than a decade and WOW, it has its moments.

God I miss the space shuttle. Such a nostalgiac machine, brimming with beauty and danger...
