I've heard his story before but I have a question about the C47.

Why did Curdes need to shoot down the C47, instead of letting it land?

Was the island getting bombarded with ordnance?

Remember the Bataan death march?  We lost Bataan very early in the war.

What a great story!

Man, it occurs to me that there are a hundred or even thousands more stories out there we will never hear. The old timers are dying off.

God bless them all this Memorial Day.

Could not have said it better!

I haven't been to the Pima Air Museum in several years.  Looks like I need to go back!

Thanks for this excellent story!  I stole it and posted it to the blog (with a link back here.)

Loved seeing the kill marker for the Italian fighter he downed.

Cool.

Without my glasses it looks like a knife, fork, and a spoon ?

Its not your glasses, it's the photography .

I have no clue what that is, maybe three fasces?  But why 3?

Some WWII guru, help us out here.

Wow. Nowhere is the adage "truth is stranger than fiction" more true itself, than in wartime.

Left out from the caption board next to the exhibit is that one of the two nurses that were rescued after the C-47 went down would later become his wife.

Craziest story ever.

I read this in my youth in either an issue of Wings or Air Classics.  It was more in-depth, including a first hand account by the Lt.  Remember, the Japanese had a copy of the DC-3, the L2D, code named "Tabby" so there was always the possibility that he shot down a Jap in disguise, even he did not know at first.

Odd looking right.

Still, I hate this look even worse.

I cant read the text. this is the pilot during the war that saw an allied transport (C-47?) turning for final on an enemy airstrip and lit it up causing them to divert/ditch and later be rescued instead of becoming POW?

the pilot later married one of the passengers correct?

No no no! A kill marking for Michael Moore would have the spoon replaced by a shovel. He stopped using those little spoon things years ago. Said they were too ineffecient.
