My daughter is the same age, and going through something of the same phase. One day I was treated to a rant on "rape culture". "Rape Culture does this" and Rape Culture teaches that." I let her wind down a bit and then spoke to her like an adult, pointing out 3 things:
1) She was referring to "Rape Culture" as if it was an actual person, doing and saying things. 2) The internet is an echo chamber; people with similar opinions congregate and reinforce each others perspective without any critical thinking. She needed to look at her sources and their motives. 3) While I disagree that there even is something described as "rape culture" (except in the minds of perpetual victims) I wasn't going to argue with her about that. What I did tell her was that she needed to concentrate on what SHE needed to do to protect herself, not what OTHERS needed to do to "just not be all rapey." There's another thread on here about how a girl's relationship with her Dad sets the pattern for her relationship with men for the rest of their lives. I'm fortunate that I still have some time with her to try to get some ideas embedded in her head to combat the crap that she gets bombarded with everywhere else. The OP's niece is forming opinions; it's unfortunate that he is unable to help form them in the right way, because her Dad isn't doing it. |

The OP's niece is forming opinions; it's unfortunate that he is unable to help form them in the right way, because her Dad isn't doing it. I haven't seen the guy in a few years when he moved to Oregon. We were always a tight knit family growing up, all got a long well. He can be liberal but I think is more middle of the road and more reasonable than that. But whatever. It's not my place to tell someone to ask their kids to think differently, even if we did share the same views. This isn't just a problem with my niece, or second cousin, or whatever she is to me, but a growing problem with indoctrination in the schools. You tell she is just repeating talking points with nothing to back up her claims. Makes you almost feel bad, but glad I was born before her generation. I dunno though, my sisters are just a few years older than her, but they are pretty conservative. |
