To this day I can't write a check at Walmart. About fifteen years ago I was working out of town, and a drug addict contractor broke into my hotel room and stole my checkbook. He went to theWalmart across the street and wrote a check for a bunch of sinus medicine and a case of Bud Light. His next stop was at a branch of my bank, and for some reason or another they questioned him about the check he was trying to cash, I got a page from my wife, who had gotten a call from the bank. He was arrested, and the bank put a stop on all of the checks in that book.
A few weeks later I got a nasty gram from Walmart, they wanted $46.18 plus a $35.00 returned check fee. I let them know what happened, faxed them a copy of the police report, the manager I spoke with told me it was taken care of. Two weeks later I got another nasty gram. I was tired of dealing with it, so I paid the $76.18. Six months later I got another nasty gram, they were trying to collect on that bad check again. I paid it again, assuming that Walmart had just fucked up, I was busy and less than a hundred bucks just wasn't worth the time.
I haven't heard from their collections in 13 years, but about five years ago I was in Walmart and didn't have my debit card, but did have my checkbook, I went to write a check and it was refused. They told me I had an outstanding bad check at store number XXXX in the amount of $46.18, I asked where that store was, sure enough it was the same store and the same check that I had already paid for twice.
