But how come it is
your thing to decide, and not your daughter's? Meaning, is it not a keepsake you think your daughter will want for herself some day in the future? Especially since the possibly even-more-famous-in-the-future artist who did the logo was a former childhood friend?

Sorry, misunderstood the situation.
But the now-famous artist was your daughter's friend? So still, she may want a remembrance of her friend before-fame, if your son was not interested in the helmet?
If not, I like the "get it signed and ebay it" route! Whoever said that had a good suggestion.
You never know, fans are crazy, and may pay some crazy prices for something like that.
