.450 Bushmaster gets my vote. Its an awesome caliber, really puts the smack down on critters. Mine is incredibly accurate with a 16" barrel.

This....I'm torn between a Socom 16 or Scout Squad...leaning towards Scout since it has a standard gas system for suppressed shooting. THe only thing different about the SOCOM's gas system are the gas lock/front sight base/muzzle and plug, and I'm not sure how the plug is different. I agree with you, as I think I'd rather have a Scout/Squad than a SOCOM, but it's what I have for now. TaylorWSO: LOL |

Old school rule of thumb was that blunter ,slower bullets will not deflect as much as pointy , faster calibers.
The ballistic type guys tell us that any bullet that smacks a twig or weed is going to go sailing . I suspect that the guy using the levergun with iron sights is more likely to see the twigs and brush and will avoid those shots where the guy using the bolt gun with high power scope at 150 yards won't see that twig 40 yards out. Whatever your feelings I believe the best gun to hunt with is the one the shooter is most comfortable with and shoots the best with . Confidence will kill more stuff than any ballistic table. Don't be the guy who reads the gun rag article about the newest greatest wiz bang mega thunder wonder 30 mag and trades in dads 308 to buy it because you missed the shot last year on the buck at 80 yards |
|
SKS or AK. Cheap, cheap and plentiful ammo, muzzle energies consistent with 30-30 but with slightly better ballistic, accurate enough out to 200-300yds. Depending on state laws you can use high cap mags. In MS there is no limit, you can use a 75 rd drum if you want to tote it.
What's not to love? |

I was really hoping one of the new "mystery guns" Ruger hyped all summer was going to be an updated Deerslayer. I can't think of a better "woods walking" gun. And it would have been a nice suppressor host. View Quote Synthetic stock, decent iron sights and a 1913 rail, ability to use 10/22 trigger packs, threaded barrel.... Oh yeah... and a "take-down" option like those 10/22s. |

Fat and slow bullets do not pass more accurately through twigs than fast and small bullets.
Research it. |

FAL in .358 winchester. I know one of the guys here from AK has one.

I really like my 458 SOCOM.
I'm a big lever lover & handload for my 45-70's so I already had lots of different grain bullets to choose from. Most loads are comparable to 45-70 & follow up shots are much faster. Though with a hammer like that you don't NEED too many follow ups. |
|
Odd that only two people have mentioned the .35 Remington. It's not the latest and greatest by any means, but for a short range gun in heavy brush it would be my choice. Not sure who chambers an autoloading carbine for it these days, but I suspect one of the major manufacturers could fix you up.

View Quote Thats why I got a pump action 7600 18" Carbine in 30-06. Did the 7400 thing. Never had much problems with jamming using factory 4rd mags. Went with the 7600 for the free float barrel. Very accurate, never jams but still stuck with 4rd mags. Why someone can't make a decent 10rd mag is a mystery to me. The 7600 carbine has become the perfect still hunting or climbing tree stand rifle for me. |

450B or 458 SOCOM for AR15 platform. Lighter than any AR10 platform.
Ammo for 450 is cheaper, but less selection. SOCOM if you're a reloader. Take your pic. Very similar results. |

What's wrong with the Ruger 44 mag Deer Slayer? Great little carbine for brush or heavy woods hunting. It's not tacticool, but it works well. It's also light without much recoil and can be gotten used for $350-$400.
Edit: Beat dammit!

AR10, SBR'ed with a 10" barrel.
The muzzle flash should light the brush on fire. Probably your best option when it comes to quickly and effectively hunting brush. |

Hunting in brush can also scratch and mar your gun, so I wouldn't choose anything too fancy or pricey. I suggest a .44mag. out of a carbine bbl, you can get a 240 grain jsp going over 1800 fps. View Quote This. I love my little Ruger Deerfield carbine for hunting hogs in the thick woods. |
