I don't know if that is a term I would use for someone so wildly professionally successful in the open free market... It is good to see Romney constantly attacking Democrats and constantly attacking Obama in the media. That is good to see. Far from anything and anyone I would refer to as a "washout." He could afford to retire to his own private island somewhere... Instead he is helping fund conservative tickets, and issues, and constantly and consistently attacking Democrats and Obama in the media. He has a media persona, an influence and appeal to many potential voters, and he is using it to promote conservative issues and candidates. He stumped hard for Mia Love in Utah. He pulled all the stops to help get her elected... He put his own money where his mouth is to get conservatives elected... I do not think I could call someone who played a vital role in helping push and promote conservative candidates and issues a (your words) "washout." He could be relaxing on his own beach somewhere relaxing. Instead he is financing and supporting issues and candidates *you* claim to support. I can give $20 bucks to a candidate. *He* can turn the tides of an entire race... |

Holy shit, I didn't know Karl Rove was a member here.
Here's a little pro-tip for the "But but but electable!" crowd. If Candidate A is loathed and reviled by the majority of the base of your political party, and you need to expend huge amounts of effort to explain why they shouldn't hate him then he's probably not electable. Romney signed state mandated healthcare, Romney signed a gun ban, Romney flip flopped on abortion and a number of other important points. You can post dictionaries worth of moral equivocation and character references from his family and friends to try to explain all that away, and hell you'd probably even be right in some cases. But elections are decided by two things: the base getting fired up about a person and turning out strongly, and low information voters who break for the more likeable candidate. Mittens had a record that, regardless of the spin machine, made large sections of the base hate him; and all of the charisma and likeability of a potted plant that a homeless guy took a shit on. I would bet large amounts of money that Mittens won't be running in 2016. But the lessons that 2012 taught us are invaluable, and all of the former Romney campaign volunteers desperately trying to ret-con why he got smoked so bad are ignoring those lessons. |
