My favorite. Which direction is the dancer spinning?

http://www.maniacworld.com/Spinning-Silhouette-Optical-Illusion.gif

counterclockwise? What am I missing?

Edited: unless she's spinning clockwise so fast that it is registering counterclockwise to the eye like the propeller.

its a perspective thing. i see her spinning clockwise. if you kinda stare though the image (magic sailboat style, and image she is spinning the other way, you can switch the direction you see her spinning.

edit: now that i have practiced i can switch her "direction" every few revolutions. try it.

If you are having trouble seeing it, try this:

-watch her spin whatever direction, lets say you see her going counter clockwise

-then close one eye and block out the image with your hand.

-adjust your hand so you only see the lower left corner enough to see the tip of her foot pass.

-watch it for a few turns and image that little tip of foot you see is moving CLOCKWISE

-and slowly reveal the image by moving your hand to the right

All I know is that the clockwise people are scary and different and must be purged from the face of the earth.

That spinning chick just changes her direction every couple revolutions.  It's a fake.  Prove it isn't.

I've never really been into optical illusions. The first time I saw this it blew my mind.

You can even print out one to make. I did and put it on my desk.

Yeah, that one's pretty cool.

In all honesty, this is probably my favorite illusion: Squares A and B are the same shade.

I thought you were on crack, but damned if it isn't true!

cute how her tile changes color when she moves it

not convinced.

Me either.

This is some kind of chris angel BS.

I didn't believe that one either until I took a piece of paper and layed it over the squares and just cut out those two. They are the same shade.

Talk about optical illusions! One second I'm seeing meerkats, I refresh the page and it's a kitty cat. Amazing!!!

look at the shadow.  Tell yourself the light source is in front of her so the outstretched leg casts a shadow when it's behind her.  Now tell yourself the light source is behind her so it casts a shadow when it's in front of her.

Hmm, the letter A is brighter than the B. Im trying to figure out how this works once and for all.

B square still looks brighter to me.

Fine. Slower.

It convinced me when I blocked out all the squares except B (hold your hand over the image and make a hole to look thru), and only then you don't see B change color.

Your perception changes. The tile does not.

I saw the colored squares thing years ago.

The squares ARE THE SAME COLOR. If you don't believe me, open the thing up in Photoshop and cut it into sections and compare.

I just did it with a program I have.  They are, without a doubt, the same color.  Tried multiple times in different areas, cutting & pasting from one to the other, backwards & forwards and they are identical.  Pretty cool.

Cool as hell .
Did they have to fill their suits with or did natural buoyancy keep them against the ice?

You have a buoyancy control device of some sort when diving, be it on your back or a vest. It is inflated with a small amount of air from your tank to give you more positive buoyancy. You release the air to become more neutrally or negatively buoyant, depending on what you want to do. You balance it out with lead weight depending on your natural buoyancy, your equipment, and conditions.
They probably didn't have weights and had nearly full BCDs when they did that, so they would be much more positively buoyant.

Well, actually they are using their dry suits as a BCD (yes I realize they are wearing backplates and bladders)...They trap the air in their legs and that makes them "stick" or actually float to the ice (notice how bulged their legs look).  Actually this event would be very dangerous to non experienced dry suit divers that don't know how to bleed the air that gets trap in the lower regions.  Also, I bet they are using a lighter then air inert gas to fill the drysuits

Not really an optical illusion but while sunspots appear as black spots on the sun, they would be brighter than an electric arc if they were isolated from the rest of the sun.  They only appear black because the rest of the sun is so much brighter than the sunspot.

Not so much an optical illusiion as an animation method, but still cool as hell.
