Greetings from Texas!

Just wanted to bump this so it didn't get archived.  I was thinking 30 days of inactivity got a thread archived and I wasn't sure I could bring it back to life after that.

So back to the top.

I am about to order a trans controller (Optishift) for the 4L80E, a new torque converter, and a shift kit.  Then I will be on the hunt for a 9" rear to slap in.

I am already itching to be back at home and working on this thing again.  I have so many ideas running through my head and here I am thousands of miles away.  Oh well!

Spring time should be interesting in my neck of the woods!

Pretty much no 80s-90s musclecars allowed out here.

Smog laws and obscure, hard to find little bits for said smog equipment make them a no-go.

Pity, as they don't rust. Have seen many, otherwise intact T/As, IROCs and Montes in salvage yards here.

Fuck California.

CA doesn't have street rod (heavily modified, new engine or whatever) or historic (20+ yo) classes?

1975 and newer needs smog every two years.
Was a rolling 30 year exemption but our washed up action hero former governor repealed that.
Our smog laws being as confusing as our gun laws does not help.

It pretty much used to be a joke as just about every gearhead knew "a guy" that would help the process along. That is now a FELONY and they have jailed people for it.
Owning anything with a carb (or early EFI) that needs smog is a labor of love and lots of $s.
Costs me an average of $1,000 every two years to get one of my trucks through the process. For a toy that gets driven ~1,000 miles a year.

If the state had their way, everything pre 1996 would be rounded up and crushed. The brithplace of the hotrod now hates hotrods.

Thanks for keeping this thread alive guys!

Just two weeks now and I will be back at home.  Then it is game on, some tires are gonna be getting melted.

Alright I got in last night, today was my first chance to see my Monte in the daylight.  It ain't pretty!

Now it's time to dig this thing out!  I'm going to pull the engine and trans, bolt up the 4L80E, slap that back in there, then on to all the smaller details to get this thing on the road.

Lots more pics to come as always.  But at least I am home and work can resume!  Stay tuned!

Haha!

Yes the hood is most definitely back on!  I hated to put it out in the driveway while I was gone but the wifes car and my Corvette get to spend their time garage!

Now the hood and probably the nose will come off while I try to get her ready to hit the road.

That sounds kind of contradictory but that is the best way I can see to get where I want to be with this thing!

Tag.

Brings back memories.  A buddy of mine in HS had one all modded out and let me drive it once.  My first real taste of V8 power, and I liked it.  My face when I first smashed the gas = .

They make a nice 6 speed auto crammed into a 700R4/4L60 case now. Kind of wish I had bought that instead of the T56 for my TA.

I remember we'd swap out the cat stack on my RX-7 while it was still warm from going to the Smog station.

Guess who's back?

Sorry for the lack of updates.  I have been a little too busy for the Monte lately.  But I got some work done this afternoon!

I  was wanting to use the stock truck accessories (alternator, water pump, and power steering) to avoid buying expensive replacements.  I had swapped out the truck intake with one from an older LS1 and people said it wouldn't work with the truck accessories.  Since I hate being told I can't do something I figured I would do my best to make things work.

First I put the water pump on and the water neck for the radiator hose interfered with the throttle plate.  A few whacks with the hammer and I rotated it enough to where it would work fine.  But then I had to intall the PS pump and alternator bracket, shown sitting at the end of the red arrow.

When I tried to install it I found out immediately why folks say it won't work.  Because it won't!  Big time contact with the TPS sensor.

So I pulled it back off, yanked the idler puller and broke out the mighty sawzall.

A few minutes of surgery later I had something that just might work!

Dropped it back in place and voila, perfect fit.

I put the tensioner pulley on and with the help of blue painters tape figured out a new belt routing scheme.  I am not sure if there is enough wrap on the crank pulley or PS pulley but at the very least it will get me going!

And finally, since I know you all like pics, here is what I have been smelling while I was out there working on the Monte.  Ultra slow smoked pork chops.  Rubbed with my own Cajun seasoning they are now wrapped in foil and headed to the finish line when we will devour them!

More to come but I am not too far off from a rip down the street.  The next update should have some exhaust building goodness!

Stay tuned!!!!

As opposed to lopping the entire assembly off, would it have been workable to notch the back of the bracket to clear the TPS? or, would this have then left the idler pulley interfering with the air intake tube?

Regardless, nice job!!!

You may want to add an idler on the right side to give you some belt wrap. That is not enough to not slip. Nice project.

I installed a stage II turbo on my Acura NSX.  475+ at the crank on a 3.0.   Still prurring like a kitten at with over 2 years FI.  Origional unopened motor with 100k on it.
My secret?  Keep max boost within reason and AFR's slightly under 12 when under full boost.

Thanks for the great thread.  It's a nice diversion from some of the regular stuff here.

Just a small update tonight but I am still plugging along!

PARTS!!!

Pictured here are water cut flanges for the exhaust manifolds, they are REALLY nice for what they cost!  Also included in that purchase was a nice EGR block off plate.  There are also a bunch of exhaust bends, a turbine inlet flange, a 3" to turbine inlet flange adapter, a gorgeous two into one pipe reducer, a wastegate, and a BOV that I salvaged from a previous turbo project.

I'm getting closer, just moving a bit slower than I wanted to.  Turbo hot side construction will be starting shortly, my favorite part!

As always stay tuned!

Cool project from one gear head to another. Worked on 80's Camaro's, Monte's, and one very annoyingly loud Caprice that my friend and I would double date sisters in.

One question though.. why turbo instead of Magnacharger/Magna-esque Supercharger if your just looking for 450-500HP?
