Greetings from Texas!
Just wanted to bump this so it didn't get archived. I was thinking 30 days of inactivity got a thread archived and I wasn't sure I could bring it back to life after that. So back to the top. I am about to order a trans controller (Optishift) for the 4L80E, a new torque converter, and a shift kit. Then I will be on the hunt for a 9" rear to slap in. I am already itching to be back at home and working on this thing again. I have so many ideas running through my head and here I am thousands of miles away. Oh well! Spring time should be interesting in my neck of the woods! |

Cool! Wish I could play. Pretty much no 80s-90s musclecars allowed out here. Smog laws and obscure, hard to find little bits for said smog equipment make them a no-go. Pity, as they don't rust. Have seen many, otherwise intact T/As, IROCs and Montes in salvage yards here. Fuck California. CA doesn't have street rod (heavily modified, new engine or whatever) or historic (20+ yo) classes? Our smog laws being as confusing as our gun laws does not help. It pretty much used to be a joke as just about every gearhead knew "a guy" that would help the process along. That is now a FELONY and they have jailed people for it. Owning anything with a carb (or early EFI) that needs smog is a labor of love and lots of $s. Costs me an average of $1,000 every two years to get one of my trucks through the process. For a toy that gets driven ~1,000 miles a year. If the state had their way, everything pre 1996 would be rounded up and crushed. The brithplace of the hotrod now hates hotrods. |

Thanks for keeping this thread alive guys!
Just two weeks now and I will be back at home. Then it is game on, some tires are gonna be getting melted. |

Haha!
Yes the hood is most definitely back on! I hated to put it out in the driveway while I was gone but the wifes car and my Corvette get to spend their time garage! Now the hood and probably the nose will come off while I try to get her ready to hit the road. That sounds kind of contradictory but that is the best way I can see to get where I want to be with this thing! |

Brings back memories. A buddy of mine in HS had one all modded out and let me drive it once. My first real taste of V8 power, and I liked it. My face when I first smashed the gas = . |

They make a nice 6 speed auto crammed into a 700R4/4L60 case now. Kind of wish I had bought that instead of the T56 for my TA.

As opposed to lopping the entire assembly off, would it have been workable to notch the back of the bracket to clear the TPS? or, would this have then left the idler pulley interfering with the air intake tube?
Regardless, nice job!!! |

T-tops huh?
Probably should've found a solid roof car for what you intend to do. |
|
I dont know how I've missed this thread this whole time. This is glorious.

Reading about this kind of stuff always inspires me to plan a project of my own.
Even if the project never sees the light of day it's still fun to dream. |

I wish I had one of these and the money to fix it up. '86 Grand Prix 2+2 Aero Coupe. They only built around 1100. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c124/GAcop/22aerocoupe_zps6bd1fb90.jpg Here ya go. |

20,000 Views just now, damn.
There are obviously a lot of folks living vicariously through me. I love it! Thanks for the support. |

I just now saw this thread. My friend growing up had an SS Aerocoupe, and I had a '66 Mustang (still do!). I still have a big ol' soft spot for the Monte Carlo slope nose models. Keep up the good work!

You may want to add an idler on the right side to give you some belt wrap. That is not enough to not slip. Nice project.

OP wins webz. Meat and Hot Rod
Thread only needs a nice rack to hit the Manliness trifecta |

Love this thread, thanks for the updates.
I'm looking forward to picking up a project car when I get back to the States in a few months. |
|
I've always loved those cars, even though they weren't particularly fast....But you are taking care of that.
|
|
lookin good. im most likely ditching the idea of a stock manifold twin turbo and doing log manifolds for it.
|
|
Dam I always loved the turbo T's. I was so close to buying a Grand National about 15 years ago.
|
|
I installed a stage II turbo on my Acura NSX. 475+ at the crank on a 3.0. Still prurring like a kitten at with over 2 years FI. Origional unopened motor with 100k on it.
My secret? Keep max boost within reason and AFR's slightly under 12 when under full boost. Thanks for the great thread. It's a nice diversion from some of the regular stuff here. |

Looks like you found the ONE 86 Monte Carlo left in the US that hasn't been turned into a donk And now it will be stolen and turned into one. |

Cool project from one gear head to another. Worked on 80's Camaro's, Monte's, and one very annoyingly loud Caprice that my friend and I would double date sisters in.
One question though.. why turbo instead of Magnacharger/Magna-esque Supercharger if your just looking for 450-500HP? |
