I've seen the originals, once, about 20 years ago.

The X-Wing is enough of a cultural icon to be recognizable.

I attribute it to having a diverse role of being both a space interceptor and an atmospheric fighter.

I'm not a Star Wars fan, but are X-wings sapcecraft only? I thought I recalled seeing them flying in atmosphere in at least one scene. There's not reason they couldn't have airbreathing capabilities as well, is there?

There's also the matter of human psychology. Spacecraft don't need "wings" either, but no one seems to have a problem with that.

On the off chance you're not just being sarcastic, it's because the space shuttle was designed to land like a conventional airplane. There bottom was an ablative heat shield, and the wings provided enough lift for it to coast in and land horizontally.

In contrast, consider the Apollo, Mercury, and Gemini command modules. They didn't have any sort of airfoil or control surface, because they were designed so that they needed attitude control only in vacuum.

Why the hell is everyone considering he X-Wing an older design.

The Incom T-65 Space Superiority StarFighter was the newest design Incom had. The design team fled Incom and gave the plans and prototypes to the Rebels. It was originally intended to be marketed to the Empire to compete against Sienar Fleet Systems' TIE Fighter line.

Yes, the A-Wing was a high speed interceptor made for raiding Imperial Transports in lighting fast slash attacks. Fly in, hit the target, and bail. The TIE Interceptor was the Imperial answer to it. The B-Wing was the Rebels heavy gun ship to replace the aging Y-Wings.

But the X-Wing story wise wasn't an old bird.

I like the design.

What has me puzzled is the angle of the lighting for the shot. J.J and the X-Wing are casting a consistent shadow. However, when the canopy opens, the shadow it casts is literally a single line. Even full screen in 1080p, there doesn't appear to be any lighter shadow cast on the sand to imply light going through the canopy.

Actually, after thinking about it, this was filmed between 11-1. That is the only time I believe where the Sun would be at the correct angle to cast a shadow from the upper left frame to the lower right frame and still have the lower left frame shadow on the body of the prop and not cast on the sand. There is in fact a very slight shadow on the sand, in addition to the frame shadow becoming slightly shorter as it rises.

I have too much time on my hands. jeez

Yeah, they lost the bridge deflector shield moments before the A-wing hit the bridge.  If the shield had remained up for another 30 seconds, that A-wing woulda been just another unremarkable casualty.

The movie is 30 years after "Jedi."  Shirley (heh) you would expect some sort of advancement and improvement of design in that time period?

The advancement in design is to sell more toys or to show audiences something "different."  The designs in IV-VI were perfect, IMO. (except for the A-Wing)

If this is a new ship, it's not that bad.  I just hope they keep the X-Wing the same.  At least it's not drastically different, and they've kept the same hull.

Don't be shit talking my A-Wing.  not only is it faster the Falcon, out runs Ties while the pilot gives them the finger, but it also brought down a Super Star Destroyer!  What's the X-Wing done besides taking out one and half "space stations?"

Work as in create thrust, that is.

J.J. Abrams is going though a lot of trouble to make this movie, for lack of a better term, "real." Minimal use of CGI compared to Ep. 1-3.

Lucas went through a lot of crap with the first star wars, it took a lot of ingenuity on part of him and the crew, and it payed off.

Lucas than went and made the prequels as easily as possible and turned out shit.

Lukes' X-wing in The Empire Strikes Back flies in atmosphere and crash lands on Dagoba.

Entire squadrons of X-Wings take off from the rebel base at Yavin, which had a breathable atmosphere, and go directly up to shoot down the Death Star.  Likewise, they take off from Hoth, another planet with a breathable atmosphere, and escort transports past the blockading Imperial fleet.  Luke crash landing on Dagobah was because he just plowed into a fog layer that contained trees, like an imbecile.  They're perfectly capable of atmospheric flight - if you believe the Expanded Universe novels, they're actually significantly better at it than TIE fighters (easy enough to believe, considering the giant vertical panels on either side of a TIE).

As for the wings and the characteristic X-wing split, I've seen it explained as... in space, the only control surfaces you have is your thrust.  By putting engines on pylons/stabilizers, they can get them further away from the craft's center of gravity, and so exert more turning force by varying thrust output of the engines.  Splitting the wings for combat spreads the engines out further from each other, and gives the X-wing better maneuverability.

Another example, the Falcon, Luke's X-wing, TIE fighters, and Fett's Slave 1 are all seen flying through Bespin's atmosphere just fine (Cloud City).

The technology in star wars was never meant to be realistic. it was just to tell a story.  Thats why its a sci-fi fantasy.  The creators of star trek wanted realistic technologies that might be possible, and can be backed with science.  The ship was the story.

Star wars on the other hand, the ships were mainly just for transportation, and looking cool. And while ships were part of the story, they never were a driving force, only the characters.  So how they worked, never really mattered.

My vast knowledge of Star Wars spacecraft was accumulated by playing every X-Wing and TIE Fighter ever made and piloting my own player built ship in SWG: Jump to Lightspeed. If I can be hopeful for one single thing that may be spawned by new movies is that among all the random clothing, toys, breakfast cereals and other merchandise we may get some more space combat sims. Of course, this could easily backfire with a game rushed through production to pander to console peasants.

Meh, you might have to zoom it in. But, if too lazy, see below.

1.   That vertical line?? There will be no wing splitting from that line to the fuselage.

2.  That oval? Note the line running through it. That is where the wing splits. Not on the leading edge like before, but down the middle of the wing!

3.   See how top/bottom friggin lasers  curve down and up?? Wing split along line in oval, one half goes down, other half goes up.
