Lovely.
The mere thought of the additional expense of also having to hire an interpreter making "reasonable accommodations" scares the daylights out of employers, and this situation just reinforces the [well justified] fears of employers. 30 minutes into an interview the question of my military separation came up. I told the interviewer that I lost hearing in one ear. The interview ended right there. After being hired and relocating for another job, I was told during in-processing that I failed the hearing test and couldn't be hired - the decision was overturned, but it was unsettling to say the least. I no longer mention hearing loss until some situation absolutely forces my hand. Fortunately, my official medical DQ now officially reads "reconstructive metal for fracture" or something like that ... so I no longer have to mention hearing loss. Thank god for massive blunt force trauma, I guess. |
