The Tacoma topic is beat to fucking death here I know, but my V8 Silverado is nearing 200K and I'm trying to decide on a replacement. Not a fan of GM or Chrysler products these days. Want an extended cab 4x4 and better gas mileage, and a vehicle I can expect to go another 200K miles. Engine power is nice for zipping around distracted drivers on the freeway, but takes a backseat to better mileage. No major towing requirements currently. The Tacos are easy to choose from for my requirements, but the F150 has 3 different motor options I'd like a wider opinion on.

FYI, insurance on all are pretty much the same.

And completely unrelated but as promised, a little SBR porn (awaiting a Specwar currently in ATF jail):

I went F-150 SCrew FX4 and never looked back. Went 5.0L and have no regrets, best engine choice in my opinion. Looked at Tacomas hard, liked the exterior. Just no room inside, price added up quick and couldn't see paying that much money for less truck. I get 15 mpg avg and that is up and down several large and long hills to work. From KY to Lake Erie (flat drive) I got around 18 mpg. Computer said 19.2 mpg.

Kinda like comparing a civic to a crown Vic isn't it? If you ride by yourself and want a minitruck get the taco, if you have other people ride with you regularly and want to do more with it than carry the trash to the dumpster occasionally get the f-150

I bought a 2015 Access Cab Tacoma new for 25800, with V6 and 4wd.  It is possible not to get raped on a Tacoma if you look hard enough and are willing to travel a bit to pick it up.  Plus you aren't giving money to the fucking UAW.

I got the F150 SCab with the 5.0 L and have been very happy with it.  Averages 17 to 18 mpg, a guy at work has the 3.5 Ecoboost and he gets 16 to 17 mpg.

The Tacomas I'm looking at are stickered much less than the F150s ($10000 in some cases), with considerably less interior room. Though I understand Ford will move a bit more from sticker price.

How big are you?  Having owned a Ram, Dakota, F-150, F-250 and now a Tacoma I can say I will never again buy anything smaller than a 1/2 ton truck because at 6'3" I just don't fit comfortably in a Tacoma.

Don't know what price range you are looking at, but you can get 10k or more off sticker on a full size 4x4 crew cab truck from any of the big 3 near the end of the model year.

No to EcoBoost and aluminum.

That being said my 2012 5.0L F150 STX is great.

Better know what ya want and be ready to buy if you go Tacoma...was at a Toyota dealer last night and a Tacoma 4x4 TRD came off the truck and it was sold within 30 minutes....2015 models are moving quick as the 2016 model is coming...I was just there looking and hoping to take a test drive....no luck.

Why?

I get that aluminum may cost more to repair, but I looked into insurance and the 2 trucks were quoted almost the same.

And this is impressive.

They will. I got them to drop almost $10,000 off sticker on a raptor, which I wasn't sure they would seeing as how hard they were to get and long lead times.

I just looked at a Tacoma and they are nice, but really cramped inside after driving a full size truck. I also looked at the Tundra, but two of the guys I know that have them have both had transmission problems. I've heard nothing good about the Ford V6.

Hmmm...seem to have struck a nerve lol
I drive 1100 miles a week for work here in Az. I see an inordinate amount of Fords on the side of the highways. This was also confirmed yrs ago by a tow truck driver who had to tow my gf's Bronco from I-17 into Flag, his observations were the same.
Get the extended warranty, see you on the side of the road!

Yes you can. Just has to be the Sport or standard model (6' bed anyway). No TRD Off Road Package.

I've had both of these trucks (4.0 V6 Tacoma and 3.5L EB F150). Mileage is about the same. Tacoma has more comfortable front seats and is easier to maneuver in a city. F150 is quicker and has tons of interior space. As another poster said, get the Tacoma if it's just you and the F150 if you carry other people.

I'm still happy with my Tundra, but would prefer a Taco in Colorado (bought the full size while hauling a boat in TX). Tundra gets big on the trails the jeep buys cut

That said, taco prices are retarded in CO, and I'd look at the Fords if I needed a new truck tomorrow.

That is misinformation. For one thing, the Tundra isn't made entirely in the USA. It has a 75% domestic parts content, but so do the Ford F-150, Chevy Corvette, Dodge Caravan, Chevy Traverse, and Dodge Avenger, to name a few. The Tacoma only has a 60% domestic parts content.

I think it's sad that so many Americans have spent the past 40 years flushing our manufacturing infrastructure down the toilet just for an extra dose of perceived quality from the foreign brands. Personally, I think Americans that buy foreign vehicles, knowing the negative economic implications of doing so (just look at the erosion of our middle class since the foreign automakers began having success here) are basically scumbags for making that decision, and I will boycott any business that uses foreign brand vehicles.

My work (G) ride is a '14 F150 CC short bed 4x4

My POV is a '14 Tacoma TRD OffRoad DCSB 4x4
Tacoma is the shits for off road and tight quarters, slightly better MPG

F150 is the shits when on the highway
Apples to pears comparison.
If length isn't a issue, my Tacoma is the best off road trail vehicle I've owned hands down, short of a side by side or atv.  This is coming from someone who owned several 4x4's (FJ40, CJ7, CJ5, LJ, and others).
As far as the F150 goes, I love the room.  The only other truck that fit that bill was a Tundra I test drove a few years ago.  Everything else is splitting hairs.

What's sad is that this nation's auto manufacturing went stagnant and produced crap for so long that they gave away their business to their competitors. Not perceived quality, actual quality, backed up by decades of experience. Stereotypes don't come out of no where.

I'm from Michigan, a Chevy family, and was saddled with their crappy vehicles for a long time, not any more.

I'll shed as many tears for a UAW employee losing their job, as they'll shed for mine being outsourced.
