It doesn't matter.  He's a free, law-abiding citizen.  He can carry a gun if he wants.

Very true.  Some here should remember the Constitution applies to everyone, not just those we agree with.

That isn't directed at anyone in particular and honestly seems to be more of a Liberal trait than a conservative one.

Well if he is on the other side then we need to get their PR guy working for us.  A well dressed and groomed man carrying decent weapons in good leather seems to be the polar opposite of what our side usually fields as shining examples of OC.  The standard "right wing" OCer has a shitty Lorcin in a cordura holster, dirty jeans and a confederate flag t shirt.

I am assuming the mag is loaded (but probably not chambered?)....

I would feel very wierd about having a rifle slung over my BACK in a CROWD.

I would rather sling it in the front/side and keep a hand (on the handguard in this case); or perhaps yank the magazine out altogether.

Anyone else cringe over that?

Reading IS fundamental.

That's why you should have read all the way to the bottom of the article where it talked about a few of the anti-health care reform people shouting things like 'race baiter' at the demonstrators.

Both sides of the fence were represented there, as can be expected at every political rally.

Nothing in the article nor the pictures says anything about this guy's stand on the topic. Though I would be very surprised if he was pro-obamacare.

Let's wait a bit to find out some more details. He's standing next to a guy with a Ron Paul sticker on his bullhorn. He needs to be educated on proper flag ettiquette but more than likely the RP supporter is against this death care bill. RP is and so are the VERY VAST MAJORITY of his supporters because it's more nightmarish intrusion by the govt.
The article also states there were protestors both for and against the bill. I've been to quite a few anti-war rallies where we went out to conter-protest the Lefties. Often I'd wander over to their side to engage them in conversation...mostly with little success. It's conceivable this gentleman and his RP bullhorn friend showed up to counter, went over to talk and just happened to get caught by the media over on the Lefties side. Let's find out who's side he's on first before we jump to conclusions. I'm sure the interviews will be coming soon.
Either way my hat's off to him for freely excercising his 2A Right but if I had to guess, he's not a Lefty. His attire, physical frame and how he's carrying his sidearm and AR tell me "Middle class, educated, prior military/LEO experience". He would look out of place in any of the Lefty rallies I've personally witnessed.
And good on LEO! They recognized he was making no threats to anyone. His AR is carried at "Sling Arms" with the muzzle down. This is a common carry technique for patrols in a peacekeeping mission-type scenario. In 1994 while deployed to Macedonia with the UN's Macedonia/Serbia peacekeeping mission (Operation Able Sentry) I carried like this all the time. It conveys the message that you are visibly armed but you are not an offensive threat, unlike carrying your rifle in front of your body in a ready position.

I dont think it is clear what side he is on about the healthcare debate.  Although it is clear he is pro-gun which is always good.

As for people that think OC is hurting.... why?  The antis will always be antis.  The people in the middle maybe a little caught off guard, but at the end of the day nobody gets shot isn't it a positive situation.

They were around a baby killing machine gun assault rifle with 30 rounds of heat seeking  5.556 and a reload without all spontaneously dying.   Maybe that helps the perception that somebody can at least appear to be an upstanding citizen and OC without anyone getting hurt.
