After days of being force-marched through the wilderness, after surviving a massacre, Madeleine Stowe's hair was so clean it was shiny. My kinda girl. Women knew how to look after themselves back in the days before Walmart My ninety year old MIL back in her day probably didn't grow up much different. No electricity, and father was a share cropper which meant many hardships especially during the great depression of the 1930's here in America. It was, "horse and buggy," as she fondly puts it. They worked the fields and picked cotton and ate what they grew. My father was the same way growing up before ww2 in the piney woods of deep east texas. I have known many people who have had these similar experiences, not so much anymore, but have picked up a thing or two as the years have gone by and are mighty grateful now. I am about the best you will find in rural America still who can hunt, fish, trap, plant, raise and tend animals, carpenter, perform medical and stay alive relatively comfortably and secure as secure can get concerning potentially promoting deadly force if the occasion arises and needs to be addressed in that way too. There are still many of us around, as even some of us like my MIL's grandfather who first-hand told her that he had a couple run in's with the Comanche back in those times, as we are still capable of surviving in just about any situation, that being, if the situation arises in our favor even for a short period of opportunity.. There was a massacre here back in the 1880's and not being prepared was one of the main reasons why men, women, and even some small children died around here. Most of us country folk believe that everything is for a reason and that we should learn from everything as nothing should be wasted at all. It is still part of our heritage from the old timers and such. My MIL who will probably see one hundred if not killed, still lives on the next property over from me that was the stage master's house and for awhile the stage depot here in Veal Station Tx. There are cap rock cliffs about a mile from my house where you can still see the traces from the wagon wheels of the stages which passed through that area on a regular basis and then as the trace drops back down into a branch bottom containing several smaller creeks making up the watershed around here. The last of the renegade Comanche held up in my MIL's house in 1902 for several days before a detachment of cavalry came down from Ft. Jacksboro in what is today Wise County Tx. and after threatening to fire on them with field artillery grape-shot they finally gave in. The original deed from 1859 makes mention of a fair sized oak tree as its north-east boundry on the property that I and my wife Janice will inherit some day adjacent to what we own now. The stately old oak still stands there today. So do we with God's help everyday now. The state wanted to put up an historical marker on the front of her property some time back but she refused. Said she didn't want folks coming around uninvited. I had to agree. Thanks. SAE |

What version did you watch? Theatrical, DVD, or BluRay? That hack Mann fiddled with it more than Lucas and Star Wars. View Quote This is true. When I was a kid I had the theatrical version on VHS. Used to watch it all the time. Then I got the DVD years later. I liked some of the scenes that the DVD had that VHS didn't, but there were some they added that I think actually took away from it. And the music was way better on VHS. I never saw the BluRay version. |

View Quote After watching the movie my wife read the book and was struck by all the differences. I explained to her that the 1996 movie was based on the 1936 movie, not directly taken from the book. Whereas the JRR Tolkein fans were miffed at the liberties Jackson took with the LoTR movies, I think the book and the movie of "The Last of the Mohicans" each stand on their own merit and both can be appreciated separately. |
