Do tanto edged knives pierce better than conventional edged knives?

Are there any ideal points or is it really cosmetic mall ninja appeal?

Yes they can pierce through a car door.

As Commando223 said, their points can take more use than a drop point or similar.
The better ones are also hollow ground for a really nice edge.

But for regular every day use I'd still rather have a "normal" blade contour.

Chisel point knives (tanto for the mall ninjas) are easier to sharpen since they have two flat edges, instead of a constant curve.

I can't sand the darn things.
I keep a great edge on my " normal " blades just fine.
I also cut meat for six years, we didn't have a sharpening service, so blade maintenance was up to the individual.

What's the point in having the stronger point if you're going to make the edge weaker by giving it a hollow grind?

Convex is da bestest.

Tanto supposedly gives more strength to the tip of the knife if you pry with it, but makes them a bitch to sharpen.

I like the "reverse tanto" which has the strength, but is easy to keep an edge.

I'm looking at a tanto style bayonet.

It would only be used for a bayonet. So, would a tanto style be favorable for stabbing as a bayonet vs. a conventional edge?

Meh, the appeal to the tanto style blade would be that the angle the blade forms to taper towards the tip could be used as a sort of secondary tip which would be good for quick striking motions, as the force would be applied to that secondary point as it would with the regular tip.

Why would I stab a car door in the first place?

I make them because they sell and look ninja. My best penetrating designs are spears points. Spear points will go through car doors too.

There's also American tanto versus traditional Japanese tanto to consider. The traditional Japanese tanto was designed for slashing while  the American version is hyped to be about penetration. Just my 2 cents.

My only pet peeve with reverse tanto blades is that they often have chisel grinds . . which isn't bad, but they usually have left handed chisel grinds on right handed knives for some inexplicable reason.

For example, the CRKT KISS.  Left hand chisel on a right handed knife.  Try to cut something like that and your cut will get all wonky.

Why not?  I took the roof off of a Pinto using the claw end of a framing hammer once.  Good times.

"normal" knife: 1 point

Tanto bladed knife: 2 points

If you use the point of your knife more than the rest of the blade then having another point may be up your ally.

I don't particularly care for it but I'm sure there are those that do...

Having a straight blade does make sharpening easier.

I like them as utility blades. I use the angled tip at the front for box opening, and the long flat edge for cutting.

This is the shape of a traditional tanto

This is the shape of the tanto that we are discussing

The above is a Japanese kitchen knife that is used for skinning eels.  It is called  Unagi-Bocho.

This is an above view of a tanto and a drop point.  I don't see any advantage over the drop point.

I used the Bark River because it was the owner that taught me the difference.

Only because your frame of visual reference is usually the flat surface, tilt the blade and the item being cut will not know the difference (although is does indeed impart some torque to your grip which is an odd feeling for something with resistance).  Trade off of the (visual) design.  My KISS cuts packing tape.
