People used to parboil ribs and chicken before grilling them on the old fashioned flat grills that didn't have a cover. They would have to stand there with a squirt bottle to put out the fires. That's just the way it was.

This is what we do at Deer Camp...
Boil in beer (left over beer from previous weekends) until about 1/2 of bone is exposed. Then take them out, coat with BBQ sauce and them put on the grill until sauce is carmelized. As for how long? Not sure, we are usually too buzzed to watch a clock and are watching football |

I've heard of parboiling ribs before throwing them on the grill or in the oven.
The only meat you boil to cook are corned beef and certain sausages. |

In 1991 When I moved to my first apartment in Ohio(in the hood for low $) I asked many different neighbors of the same skin tone, which was different than mine, how to cook ribs. They ALL parboiled before saucing them and throwing them on the grill, and by parboil I mean boil them for 90 to 120 minutes. I used this shitty method for about 2 years before a little research led me to smoking low'n'slow on a basic webber kettle. The ketchup part of your story makes my belly hurt.

You never boil ribs, you boil away the flavor. Remove the membrane and marinate in your favorite rub overnight and grill low and slow till done.

Just buy the pre-cooked ones in the grocery, all you gotta do is heat them up.

Four tablespoons of salt, 2 hours in the pot and ten minutes on the grill. Moist and fall-off-the-bone tender. No smoky wooden taste but nice grill marks and caramelized sauce.
Brine for 24 hours in one tablespoon sugar and two of salt, use a dry rub if you want, 6 hours at 250 degrees in the smoker with moist heat and hickory wood. Mop with your favorite sauce for the last half an hour. ETA: I also cook my steaks. |

If you're to lazy to smoke them at least cook them in the oven.

If you are trying to lose weight then ribs are not exactly the best thing to eat. Tremendous calories.
However, if you really want ribs then par boiling them will significantly cut down on the calories. It will also cut down on flavor. It will not be near as good as smoked ribs but they will taste passable if you do it right. Just boil the ribs for about an hour or so in water flavored with the same kind of rub you would use on the smoker. The water will remove a lot of the fat calories. Drain them and then put them on the smoker (or charcoal grill) for a couple of hours to get some smoke flavor and the right coloring. Sear them on high heat before serving. They will taste OK (but not great) but they will have half as many calories as smoked ribs. You will never win a contest with these ribs but they are better than nothing if you are trying to keep your calories down but yet crave ribs. Don't invite your friends over for these ribs or post it as a dinner picture on the GD or else you will get your ass handed to you. Other than cutting down on calories there is no reason to ever boil ribs. |
