I hate traveling anywhere.

I'm quite happy doing my thing here in AZ.

But I will say that before I die I would like to see Austria and Scotland, but that's about it.

World travel, or just traveling this country...   basically I just want to travel.

At least one week a year. Usually the Caribbean because I need to bleed the stress off and that is what works for me

It certainly broadens your horizon.

Seeing all those unfinished hotels  in the Sinai Peninsula and overinflated homes in the UK really impressed me with the worldwide scope of the building bubble and bust.  Learning that it took over 100 years for Egypt to pay off the party held for opening the Suez Canal taught me how foolhardy it is to do what we're doing today: mortgaging our unborn children's future.  The abject poverty in Lima (there are some very wealthy areas, some middle class areas and some very poor ramshack areas)  showed the importance of a middle class (stability for society and aspiration for the poor).  In the middle east virtually all homes have black solar water heater on their rooftop.  We could be doing that in places like Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, etc. where there is an abundance of sunlight.

Naturally I've done a lot of traveling here in Estados Unidos and there's fewer than ten states that I haven't visited yet.  St. Louis is worth visiting if you confine yourself to the tourist stuff.  Ditto with Washington, DC and Richmond, VA.  New England has its charm (maple syrup, Autumn colors, Green Mountains/Adirondacks, Springfield Armory NHS), great national parks in Utah, AZ, CA.  Charleston, SC is well worth the visit (Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, Patriot's Point, Charleston itself), NY city itself has great museums (Mus of Natural History, Met. Art Museum, NY Historical Society, Governor's Island, etc.), upstate NY has Saratago battlefield, West Point Museum, NY State Military Museum, USS Stewart, CA is a beautiful place (but politically f*cked up), Hawaii its golden beaches, warm climate and Pearl Harbor.

I've been on vacations in the US, Canada, Bahamas, and Europe.

I had a blast in Europe, but jet lag kills me. BAD. It takes me several days to acclimate (not very well) I can't take Melatonin because I have constant disaster nightmares.  Then there's the long plane flight, where someone on the plane is invariably sick as shit and spreading their nasty germs everywhere.

Thinking back over the vacations, I think the most fun I had were in the US. Specifically the ones were we got ATVs and took off into the mountains. I didn't want to come home. We also went on Pictograph and Petroglyph hunts. Really amazing.

But then, seeing historic Rome was amazing. Just thinking about what could have taken place right where I was standing in the Colosseum, Senate, Temples or any of the Forums was dizzying to me. Then there was the Statue of David... (eta he is in Florence).

In the Netherlands, we went to see some of the megalithic Hunebeddens/Dolmens which was also pretty amazing. We saw one of the oldest ones in Europe.

Rereading this made me realize I like old stuff.

I can't dive a sunken Japanese fleet here.  I can in Micronesia.
I can't stay in a villa,  do  30 world class dives and get a rental truck for $500 here. I can in bonaire.
I can't get 17 great dives at an all inclusive for $1300 here. I can in the Caymans.

US vacations cheaper? Horseshit.

I would like to travel outside the US more, but to be honest there is a lot more of the US I still want to see or want to go to again.
I could probably be fine just traveling inside the US.

Military travel doesn't really count for most as you seldom go out and really see the country and culture.
At least that was my experience in the Navy.

I think it is very important for my kids to see that the world is much bigger than our little city in Texas.
We live in a smaller house than many of my coworkers but we take some pretty nice vacations several times a year.
Twenty years from now the kids won't care that we didn't have a pool in the back yard or a dedicated media room,
but they will remember all the places in the US, Asia and Europe they have visited.

I always thought "there's so much to see here in the US I doubt I'll ever seriously want to go anywhere else"...then I took a couple work trips to other countries.  Now my wife and I are planning a vacation in Europe.  Sure there is a lot to see here, but traveling outside the US is a completely different experience.

Agreed, with all the diving and the costs. Though Micronesia is serious bank...

I can go to most places in Central America, the Caribbean or likely South America for 10 days for less than what many spend for a week in Myrtle beach or Gatlinburg, Tn. The airfare to Ireland right now is around $550 and car rental is stupid cheap there. $60-$70 gets you a nice motel or B&B or you can go cheaper. Food is equilivant to eating here.

I've been around a bit.

Those other places?  They look just like the pictures.

It's cool and all, but it's not a priority.  If I'm getting paid to do it, sure.  If I've got to go out of pocket?  Probably not.

$100,000 buys you a really nice vacation every year for ten years - or your very own mountain here in the US to hunt, fish, shoot, and do whatever on, anytime you want.

I know which one I'd rather have.

The best part of world travel is you realize the above statement is an example of
misplaced ethno-geo centrism.

Diversity is not a measure of greatness.

Beauty is a relative measure based upon one's

perception. There many parts of this country for which

"beautiful" would not be an appropriate adjective.

We shall disagree that America trumps all based upon

the poster's criteria.

These travel threads always crack me up. The very definition of ignorance is expressed here so frequently.

And by that I am not insulting anyone's intelligence rather the irony of knowing that there is nothing else in the world worth seeing without ever having been to find out for yourself. Maybe you don't care to find out but it sounds ridiculous to assume that there is nothing worth seeing outside of America. A short list of mine...Pyramids, Leaning tower of Pisa, Sea of Galilee, Castles, Ruins, the world!

Guys in the military who have travelled...I have done that too and it is not remotely the same. You do yourself a disservice not to go and see the world with fresh eyes.

Seeing places in books or videos doesn't compare with being there. It's like saying having sex with a women is the same as jerking off while watching porn. I told myself when I was younger to try to have sex with a women from every continent. Almost done, but Antartica is going to be hard.

I have set foot on every continent except for the one covered in ice and I don't care to see that.

Seeing the world is why I joined the Navy and I did see a lot of it. Travel is the only thing I miss about it.

Looking to the past, there comes a point for many Americans where American history isn't their history anymore.

Sure, there are lots of interesting things to see in America, but the small farming town in Hungary where my grandfather grew up isn't one of them.

Yep. Half my family is British and still lives in England, I can't find out much about that half from Kentucky.

My dad's side only emigrated after the turn of 20th century, so there's not much of my family's history on this side of the pond.

I've done a fair bit of travel, both in the military and out of it, and now I'm content with throwing some camping gear in my 4x4 and going on a road trip once in a while.

I do want to visit Alaska again, thinking about that for summer of '17.
