While I'm a HUGE proponent of the free market, I'll caution you to be careful what you wish for. When you get a significant number of young people with no job market entry opportunities you will end up with a large population of people with no social or procreative value and nothing to lose.

I'd be fine with the robot replacing the pimply-faced teenagers at big box stores like Best Buy. I really hate when you ask them a question about a product and the extent of their ability to answer is by leaning over and reading the small white info placard under the product. Conversely, one advantage of this "job-less recession" we are still in is that stores like Home Depot (at least in my area) have canned all the pimply-faced teenagers and replaced them with knowledgeable 50-60 yr old dudes that were tradesmen before losing their jobs. So at least now I can ask a question and expect a somewhat informed response. And I absolutely love self check-out registers.

Well, according to free market principles this should only benefit society by freeing up these individuals to apply their time, interests, and intellect to pursue new endeavors or careers. Your stance is dangerously close to the same one made by people that argued word processing would eliminate tons of low-level typist jobs which they thought would be a bad thing. Hindering progress for the sake of retaining outmoded jobs is not a good thing. And if you want to discuss the biggest barrier to teens entering the workforce it's the millions of illegals who took all the low-wage jobs working in McDonald's that traditionally were the jobs teens did after school to earn a few bucks or to help pay for college. Moving from SoCal to the Midwest (where we have very few illegals from Mexico) is a strange experience because teens still do many of the "typical" teenager jobs here. It's weird going to a Taco Bell and seeing mostly young teens working there.

Unless I have some large or weird item (or there is a hot cashier), I always use the self serve checkouts at retail stores.

My wife's friend was a grocery store cashier back in the early 2000s. As I recall at the time she made something like $20-$25/hour as a unionized cashier. I commented once how overpaid that was for a job where the essential skills were simply moving an object from right to left over a bar-code reader and occasionally manually entering a code into the computer. Surprisingly, my wife's friend agreed with me.

Doesn't matter.  I usually can't find a human with a key to the ammo case.  At a K-Mart, I waited for over an hour one time and spoke to 3 different people until I finally left.

I'll start using self checkout when I get a discount to do their jobs for them.

Most of them won't understand it.

And in the areas of the country where they dominate.... I bet it takes less than five minutes for one "person" with a hammer to render a $50K robot unservicable.   And those who do it will be cheered on by the leering jackals that dominate the left.

I would love to see a computer figure out some of the off the wall shit customers asked me when I worked at Lowe's and Home Depot.  Like the people who knew what they wanted, but had no idea what it was called and couldn't describe it worth a fuck.

Describe something to Google and see what it turns up.  You'd be surprised how good it is and that's without limiting the search to a small subset of items that the store actually carries.  Of course there are limitations, but that's why they'll still keep one meatbag on staff.

At the end of the day, an economy has a finite amount of wealth to spread around.  The more one portion takes, the less is left for other portions.  So, the more money/benefits/cost is associated with the workforce, the less the employer will have to operate or take as profit.  When this happens, the employer will be forced to make cuts to the workforce to regain the balance or upper hand.

What is happening with minimum wages, healthcare mandates, insurance costs, fuel costs, etc, will have a predictable result of reducing the money available to sustain the size of the workforce.  The good idea fairies will bring about devastating long term change for short term gains.  Much like unions began bargaining themselves out of existence or relevance...simply move production when it gets too expensive.  Or shaft retiree benefits, which unions usually don't buck too hard on, after all, they want the dues-paying members to be happy even at the expense of the vested members.

Liberalism and socialism are stupid as far as economics go.  See how the most blue states now have huge wage and standard of living disparities?  Rich get richer, poor gets poorer, middle moves one way or another until it's practically gone.

Obvious what is going on, if you worked thru the mechanical thru the automation phase the last 30 years you felt it.
