Why all of the gushing support for France? They have been a pain in our geo-political side since before WWII was over. They are leftist marxists. And I am the only one who finds it suspect that the world's leading socialist nations are supporting them in their war? What is France's true interest in Mali? To "Free the Oppressed?". I doubt it. France has never given one damn for the African, except to exploit him.
And yes, as a long time grunt who has served with french troops, I respect their soldiers.

From everything I have read, the govt. there is conducted in French, many newspapers are in French, the place still has deep French roots.  They asked France for help and France obliged.  Also, I am sure there is still healthy imports / exports going on there of some sorts - who knows minerals, oil, as well?

Agreed, France has gone overboard with Socialism and will reap the consequences, just like we will if we keep going down that same dead-end ally.  Yea, the French can be "weird".  I have climbed with some and they were really nice people, but definitely "French".

Best of luck to the French troops there.

Technically they're secular social democrats.

And they are kicking some Haji ass.  Anybody that does that these days deserves our support.

A few days ago that French fellow posted another quality video:

It starts out with an airborne unit; looks like they rigged and jumped some kind of bulldozer? Then some cockpit film from some Rafale fighters. They showed some Eurocopter Tigers firing some rockets+cannon at something.

There's some decent combat footage at 6:50 as well as later towards the end. At 10:06 a soldier fires some kind of rifle grenade from the barrel of his FAMAS

Then at around 10:36 they use a really small mortar launcher...not sure which type but he seems to just eye it in.

Nice video.

I'm not sure how effective it is but that Eurocopter Tiger is a really ugly-looking aircraft; I think it beats out the Hind.

That field artillery piece looks like WWII era Red Army stuff.  Which, considering the quantity of surplus arms the USSR pumped into Africa in the 70s and 80s, it probably is.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a pic of a half-buried T34/85 come from somewhere in Mali.

Not really, it's a 122mm D30 howitzer, Cold War era yes, but still in common usage around the world, including Russia, not a WWII piece.

Yep but fortunately no "100,000 death in 1h" this time .

And it's a Super Puma not Frelon, they have been retired 2 years ago.

They were so ugly that I loved them.

Members of the CGP.

Wiki def:

The Commando Parachute Group (French: Groupement des Commandos Parachutistes, GCP) is a special forces unit in the 11th Parachute Brigade of the French Army that is within the second "circle" of authority of the Commandement des Opérations Spéciales.

Each regiment within the 11th Parachute Brigade (11e Brigade
Parachutiste) trains one or two GCP teams from their own ranks, which
then can act as recon, pathfinding or harassment forces for their home
regiment, coordinating with the other GCP teams within the brigade or
working independently behind enemy lines. More rarely the GCP is
requisitioned by the French intelligence service (DGSE) to carry out
sensitive or "black ops" missions. GCP teams are also trained to conduct
hostage rescue missions in extreme cases.

The soldiers in the pics are from the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e régiment étranger de parachutistes) and of the 17th Engineer Parachute Regiment (17e régiment de génie parachutiste).

The terrain sucks and a PGM Hecate II sniper rifle weights 30lbs without optics and ammo.

A lot of the terrain looks like the desert out here in SoCal.

As for the G-36s, I noticed all of them have underslung HK 40mm grenade launchers, which I don't believe can be mounted on the FAMAS.
