I disagree.  Stock auto with 2.73 gears and sticky tires will make him slower.  Too much stick.

Have you tried VTEC stickers?

No replacement for displacement.

Flame stickers on the fenders. That's like +20HP each.

What does a 3600 stall do?

Is your car an automatic?    it makes your car bad ass.  Like I said in my first post, with just a few mods my car was decently quick.  High 11s for a stock motor was very good back on the day.  Still quick today.  A Yank 3600 torque convertor took 0.8 seconds off my 1/4 time.

Every LS1 should have long tube headers and a lid.  Start there.  An underdrive pulley added decent power for the price. Roughly 10rwhp.  Ls6 intake is next.  All those mods are very simple .  LS1 is a stupid simple motor to work on.

Lid added 10RW on mine on back to back testing runs on dyno.
Long tubes added about 30
Cam was about 20 my car was not tuned as that was all pretty new back then. My Cam was 224/224 561/561 on a 112 LSA.

EVERYTHING  has to work together or you are just throwing parts at it. I would check the LS forums first. It depends on what you are trying to do with it and how fast you can afford to go. The more you spend, the more modified it gets, the more maintenance it will requires. Again...depending on how fast you want to go requires devotion, research and time. Trust me I know

I want to be fast enough to beat a 2014 Honda Accord grocery getter!

that's how fast.

I have an '02 Z28 with mild mods and raping accords isn't an issue.  Not sure if you're serious though.  You can run 12s with a stock LS1 with good tires.

Ok...recommend some tires...I'm all ears

If not driving in rain, Nitto Extreme drag radials.  I had 315/35/17 on mine.  Hooked like a dream on the street.  Nerve racking as hell in the rain.  Seriously.

With 118K I would stick with easy mods until a rebuild, then cam, heads, upper intake, etc.  :)

A flame paint job adds at least 30-50 hp

Cams are one of the best bang for your buck options with an LS1.

I say with $3k, Cams, Exhaust w/ headers, intake manifold.

Easily  over 100hp/torque with the right parts, and maybe even less thank $3k

This is so true, especially since some turbos have more displacement than the motors they're attached to.

Depends on your purpose;

weekend drag racers > Gears and Nitrous.

everyday > Gears, cam (or high lift lifters), intake, exhaust, retune ECU

Hard to have one without the other when your talking LS motors.

Its a 16 year old car. It could have all sorts of weak points and almost certainally the valves/heads are getting near the end of life, cooling system is likely weak , cam and valve train worn , intake old and lame , transmission and rear axle will have a good bit of wear

Bolt a bunch of expensive parts on and start pushing it hard and it is just a search for the weakest link until things are likely to start coming apart in ways that will tear the heck out of the old wallet.

I have seen guys buy up a older motor and transmission and go through them at their leisure and have them all set to stuff in the car.

You are really only out the cost of the extra block and it gives you time to rip it down and do everything right from the start

And with the stock torque converter  and gears his card would be an absolute turd with all that fancy power.

He has already been given great advice.  He has to spend money on other things before thinking about  a cam.

i'll say it again - do your con rod bolts before anything else. 98/99 have weak as shit con rod bolts. No fun throwing a rod after spending money on power
