They probably want to document each gun before someone drills a hole and claims an injury.

HOLY SHIT!

I'm gonna have to call my cousin. He bought an SKS from Cabela's around Thanksgiving and it blew up in his hand when he fired it.

Really?

  Yep.

Him and his Mom (he's only 19 and just started into the gun hobby) took it out to go shooting and when he fired it, it kaboomed.  Splintered the wood and such when it blew.  His Mom said he stood there after it blew yelling "AM I HIT? AM I HIT?" (made for a good laugh, if you knew him).

Anyway I can't confirm if this was the reason why, or if it just fired out of battery. I never got to look at the gun as he lives halfway across the state.

The part that worries me, is that he's very new to guns, so if that hole was there I doubt he would even think twice about it. Further, despite my efforts to convince him to take it back to Cabela's he's decided to put it back together with Tapco stuff, so it very well could mess up again.

To be honest and upfront, I have never had an sks, and if I saw that, I might think it was normal.  Not all of us know the ins and outs of every gun out there.  Thus when we ask a question on a website like this and we get, "HAVE YOU USED THE SEARCH FUNCTION"?  We get pissed off an leave, instead of someone taking the time to answer the question at hand and not being a jerk about it.

The time it took to say that, could of answered the question.

by the way, I try to use the search function in the equipment exchange, for instance I typed in "Vltor" and got zero threads.  Why is that?

Why the fuck would you demil a firearm in a way that allowed it to be operated to catastrophic failure.  Oh yeah, let's make it not readily apparent either

Just spotweld the bastard shut or something.

One more reason I trust the guns I build more than the ones I buy.

Couple months ago I bought a rifle on gunbroker and it came with a hole drilled in the chamber. There had been no mention of that in the description and the pics didn't show that part of the chamber. He would not make it right, I was kind of pissed off.

People who have bought these years ago received the letter, you'd think someone would have noticed by now.

Has anyone else come forward with a 100% certain de-mil sks?

As I understand it this only became known about a week ago ~

That hole is a safety device to make sure the chamber pressure doesn't get too high.

I hear that's going to be a feature on Gen 5 glocks.

This product specialist told me demilaterized means the firearm was
milled and there could be a problem with milling during manufacturing

I called my cousin and told him about it. He said he knew about it b/c a friend who also bought one received a call from Cabela's. However, he didn't know there were others and just assumed it was a one off deal. I haven't talked to him since I called him, so I don't know if he's received a call or if he's made a call.
These import guns are a fantastic deal for younger guys like him, so I hope this is taken care of quickly. His first gun was a Mosin nagant b/c it was dirt cheap to shoot and buy. He then bought the SKS to mess around with.  When he showed up for Christmas, his parents bought him a P-38.

I sure hope he buys an American gun some time soon.

As someone in a gun store, I'm somewhat concerned about the now-apparent possibility of effectively-sabotaged weapons coming through my store.  As an individual, though, I can completely understand how something like this would escape the notice of both Cabela's and the end user.  We don't see things that we aren't looking for, and up until today I'd almost guarantee that no one here who bought an SKS inspected it with the intention of finding a hole drilled into the chamber.

Some local guys were running a private tactical match, and set up a stage where the shooter started with an empty weapon, and ten rounds of ammo sitting in a hat about a hundred yards behind the firing line.  At the buzzer they had to run to the hat, grab one round, chamber it, get to the line, and fire...then repeat the cycle until all rounds were expended.  Halfway through, the RO surreptitiously dropped a live 7.62x51 round into the hat.  Some individuals were simply never able to determine why they couldn't load the round into their magazine, no matter how long they kept trying.  The point is, we tend to be blind to the possibilities we haven't even dreamed of, and sooner or later that blindness will catch every person by surprise, in some way they simply couldn't anticipate.

Wow. Did not know an SKS cost so much these days.
Purchased a crate of them, new, cosmolined of course, think was $80.00 per rifle.
Maybe around '02.

I've mentioned this issue several times to a couple of Mods, along with several very long term and high post count members. Hopefully they're working on it.  I have seen tons of new folks run off. Yes, this is GD, and it can be tough here, but a new guy has no clue what he might be getting into. At the very least he should be provided a warning and some anal lube.

To a lot of people that are new to guns that hole may look like it is for some type of attachment or something. I wouldn't be too critical of someone that hasn't been doing this that long. After all, we all started somewhere. Concerning the website layout, anyone that is new to any website, including this one may not find it easy to navigate at first, and I've had a lot of people say that the search function can be difficult to use until you get used to it.

Anyone that knows anyone that that bought one of these, or for that matter, any SKS period at this point, should inspect it and be careful.
There may be quite a few that were bought at Cabela's and when found not to function were traded to other people, or for a gun at a gun shop somewhere. Those other people may be in for a shock, and , there are far too many gun shops that will look at it and seeing that it looks clean, will figure the shooter to be stupid, and just tag it and put it out for sale rather than inspecting it.
One other thing, if the importer is responsible, Cabela's is likely to be just one of many gun dealers that got these unsafe rifles from them. All of the above could have been repeated over and over a hundred times by now.

I would urge anyone that has a facebook account to post the photo and an explanation on their wall, and send it to their friends as well.
