Get a "CDL" and drive. I have to pay $25.00 - $30.00 per hour. For a good driver here in VA. And full benefits (hosp. for the babies). Good luck!

Private investigator with law firm clients.  Lots of differnt activities involved, some field work, some computer work, some investigative and reporting work.  With your contacts you should be very successful.  You can work when you want.  Hell you can even do divorce work when you are bored and post those pics here  [:D]

How about we go in partnership bringing in guest workers for all the beach front hotels/motels that can't find dependable housekeeping and stewarding staff?  We get to travel at host government expense, manage the in and out of country flow, set up a couple of spin-off corps to handle housing and transportation.  E mail me.

Bounty Hunter.  Work the hours and jobs that you want.  It's not to hard to get qualified, in some states it's only the matter of filling out the paperwork.  Plus you can walk around armed to the teeth.

I don't even know why I started reading this post, but I do now know that most people haven't a clue about answering your question.

I assume from reading the posts that you are/were a pilot?  You worked for the DEA?

You want a job that has a regular schedule, good income and benefits to supplement your existing finances.  You want to be able to see your kids grow up and be a part of their lives on a regular basis.

To start with I would seek out the best temporary placement agency and go in and take them up on their free proficiency and aptitude testing and see what they come up with.  You might find that you are well suited for a job that they have that you might like.  But at the very least you will find out some information about you and the job market.

Work for a small business if you want to feel valuable, have a cool boss like me and don't work for anyone who is poor, or just sqeaking by.  If the boss isn't making money you can bet the employees aren't gonna either. Work for someone who is successful.  Real Estate is boring, but it is surely pretty steady, requires little training and pays well.  I just don't have the knack of working with the public.

You could start a business, but that is risky, expensive and has a less than 10% survival rate for 5 years. Not my kind of odds.

Good luck in your search, I know it is hard to change careers, especially with the prospect of a family in your future.

Beer Slayer, NO WAY they'd elect me. I'm WAY TOO HONEST.

Waldo, don't have my own plane and ain't interested in chemicals. I've probably already inhaled enough bad shit.

Leadfly, PIs, are plentiful in S.Fl and as a result don't make jack.

Beachboy, what are you set up for and what is your proposal? Feel free to email me.

SWIRE, got buds who are already trying to strongarm me into working with them. But 3am in Opa Locka ain't my idea of safe.

OregonShooter, that would be a long drive to work.

Big B, you pretty much grasped my situation. I'll look into the aptitude test. I'm just concerned I am only qaulified to do jobs that I no longer have a interest in.

Steyr,

One thing I have noticed in the past 5-10 years since I entered the workforce is that many jobs that are available today do not depend upon prior specific knowledge or training.

An aptitude for computers for instance will allow you to adapt to do anything that an employer wants done in a Windows environment.
If you can run a computer you can quickly learn the specifics about running any software package.  Remember you are competing with people who for the most part are:

1. Unable to find the power button on a computer.

2.  Unwilling to show up for work regualarly.

3.  Lazy, unmotivated and seem to lack a sense of purpose in their life.

And don't set your expectations of finding the "right" job the first time out.  That is one advantage of a temp. service where you can enroll in the temporary to permanent employment program.  You work for a company and if you like them and they like you they will keep you.  If you don't like the job you don't have to stay you can just try another.  The whole time you are getting paid and not running up a resume that looks like you are job hopping.

You should also look on the internet and see what kind of jobs are available in your area.  I know a man with a highschool diploma and no computer skills who underwent a year of paid training to maintain cellular tower equipment.  He has his own truck, free gas, free laptop and he works for ATT Wirelss by himself most of the time.  He is on call every other weekend and makes over $ 75,000 per year.  He works at cell tower sights inside the little building diagnosing and fixing equipment using his laptop to pinpoint the problem.

There are lots of similar jobs that nobody knows how to do from school, college, or prior experience that just take aptitude and training.

How about corporate security??

Wireless security??

One of the Big Boys,ATT or whomever, has their National Office and info center located in FL if I remember right.

It's the law enforcement clearing house for all the cell companies across the country.  Call them up, give them phone no. and/or serial no./code no. of cell phone and computer kicks out who's supposed to own it.

Coroner's office, not too much front line stuff.

Good luck,
Powderburner

You should try your hand at being an investment advisor. You must have a lot of buddies in you previous work that can help with their finances right? Well it will be good to help them with it and yourself. Being an independent advisor affords you your own time. You work as hard as you want to make money. I would start looking into that if I were you. Try AXA advisors. Big company yet allows you to be independent. Same with American Express financial Services.

Merrill and those guys won't let you go at it at your own pace. Your gonna be working your ass off to make your production goals.

Look into see if it works for you.

Pay some high-school kid to set up a website for you, slap some porn on it, and charge $19.95 a month for access to it.

For a change of pace, set up the ol' Sony on a tripod in the bedroom and create some of your own content.

You never have to leave the house, and it appears you spend a lot of time using your Web browser as it is ;)
