Iraq parliament defers vote on new government Acting parliament speaker ends brief session due to disagreement on nominees and absence of Kurdish delegation. Iraq's deadlocked parliament has ended its second session without making any progress towards forming a new unity government that can confront armed rebels who have seized control of a huge part of the country. Deputies had gathered in parliament on Sunday for talks intended to agree on a prime minister, president and speaker of parliament, three months after Iraq's parliamentary election. But the meeting only lasted for 30 minutes before it was adjourned. The political impasse has been given added urgency by the advancing armed fighters who swept through Sunni provinces of northern Iraq last month and have threatened Baghdad. On Sunday, Sunni fighters led by Islamic State group attacked a town 70km north of Baghdadand seized local government buildings, killing at least six people. http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2014/07/iraq-parliament-defers-vote-new-government-201471311118928383.html |

In Ramadi, gunmen are still in control of the city's southern sector as well as the western sector. They are launching mortar and rocket attacks on the 8th Brigade HQ from the 5 Kilo district of western Ramadi as they attempt to take over the facility. Meanwhile clashes have erupted between gunmen and the local police supported by some of the tribal 'Awakenings' men in the city's northern and northeastern countryside areas along the Euphrates River. In Fallujah, rockets and mortar rounds have been falling onto a number of residential districts since last night. The Fallujah General Hospital has announced that 4 residents were killed and 6 others wounded as a result of those attacks. In Al-Garma, the town is still completely besieged on all sides after a number of its districts were shelled yesterday. In Haditha, the situation has not changed since the armed groups attempted an assault into the town. The situation within the town is relatively calm and a dusk-to-dawn curfew is still in force. Meanwhile, the gunmen are still in control of the main towns in Anbar, all the way to the Syrian border. Government air strikes are also continuing on suspected gunmen positions in those areas. But it is definitely the gunmen who are running things there and they are in full control of the security situation, as well as the day-to-day living conditions there. |

Maybe they are trying to get Maliki to commit to defending Baghdad while they take more area. I have no clue. I would not think going at Baghdad with a small force would be very smart. |

Iraqi army launches assault on Tikrit Security forces attempt to take back town that fell to Sunni rebels last month, security sources say. The Iraqi army has launched an assault to retake the rebel-held city of Tikrit, security officials said. The operation on Tuesday is part of a two-and-a-half week long Iraqi offensive aimed at taking back the city, which fell to Sunni rebels led by the Islamic State group in June. Iraqi state TV said security forces had successfully expelled Sunni rebels from the city and were in "complete control" of the area. Al Jazeera's Imran Khan, reporting from Baghdad, said officials were "very confident" about the claim. |

Iraq MPs break deadlock and elect speaker Sunni lawmaker Salim al-Juburi is nominated as a consensus choice, winning 194 votes in the 328-seat parliament. Iraqi lawmakers broke their deadlock Tuesday and elected a new speaker of parliament, taking the first formal step toward forming a new government that is widely seen as crucial to confronting rebels who have overrun much of the country. The legislature voted on Tuesday to pick Sunni lawmaker, Salim al-Juburi, as the new speaker with 194 votes in the 328-seat parliament. It was unclear whether al-Jubuuri's election indicated that a larger agreement had been struck among political blocs for the posts of president and prime minister. The parliament has 30 days from the time it elected its speaker to pick a new president, and another 15 days to elect a prime minister. http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2014/07/iraq-mps-break-deadlock-elect-speaker-2014715112421389478.html |

Tuesday, July 15, 2014 15 July 2014 In Ramadi today, gunmen were around the perimeter of the Anbar Operations Command that houses the Army local HQ in central Ramadi. There have also been intermittent clashes in some districts in the city's southern sector. There have also been clashes and shelling in the western districts which have been controlled by the gunmen for about two weeks. Yesterday there were clashes and mortar shelling around the 8th Brigade HQ in the western sector. In Fallujah, a casualty count has shown that 4 residents have been killed and 11 others wounded in the shelling, since last night and up to noontime today, of numerous districts of the city. That brings the total count since the beginning of the crisis up to 551 killed and at least 2,000 wounded, according to the Fallujah General Hospital. To the northeast, in Al-Garma, intensive shelling has targeted many of the town's districts, as well as the town's general hospital that has been hit by shelling for the third time. The facility was heavily damaged and three of its medical staff were wounded. In Anbar's western regions, the main towns are still being controlled by gunmen, but these areas have been struck by the army air arm. The areas around the border between Nineveh and Anbar governorates have also been bombarded, as have the areas along the Iraqi-Syrian border. These areas have struck almost daily, but the surrounding populated areas are still under the control of the gunmen who are regulating the general situation there, in a similar way to their takeover of Mosul. http://anbardaily.blogspot.com/2014/07/15-july-2014.html?spref=tw |

Iraqi army retreats from Tikrit after assault stalls
(Reuters) - Iraqi forces have withdrawn from the militant-held city of Tikrit after their new offensive met heavy resistance, in a blow to the government effort to push back Sunni insurgents controlling large parts of the country. The failure highlights the difficulties of Baghdad's struggle to recapture territory from the insurgents who seized Mosul, Tikrit and other cities last month in a rapid offensive which threatens to fragment Iraq on ethnic and sectarian lines. Why Hezbollah is playing a smaller role in this Iraqi conflict
Hezbollah has dispatched a team of around 250 military advisors to help Iraqi Shiites fight back against the extremist Islamic State (IS) and other Sunni forces, according to sources close to the Iran-backed Lebanese Shiite militant group. The deployment of the team comes as Hezbollah continues to battle Syrian rebel groups both in Syria and lately inside Lebanon, on its eastern frontier, underlining just how interwoven the conflicts in Syria and Iraq have become. Hezbollah’s 250-strong unit in Iraq will be responsible for advising, training, and coordinating the Iraqi Shiite militias under the aegis of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Hezbollah-connected sources said that the unit in Iraq has been engaged in reconnaissance and intelligence work on IS, trying build up a picture of its military strength, its areas of deployment, and the durability of its alliances with other Iraqi Sunni groups opposed to the Shiite-dominated government. http://news.yahoo.com/why-hezbollah-playing-smaller-role-iraqi-conflict-110003515.html |

Al Qaeda's North African wing rejects Iraq-Syria caliphate
ALGIERS (Reuters) - Al Qaeda's North African wing has rejected the mediaeval-style caliphate declared by a militant Islamist group in Iraq and Syria, and confirmed its allegiance to al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri, according a statement posted on social media. The statement attributed to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) criticized Baghdadi's group for failing to consult with jihadi leaders, according to SITE, an authoritative U.S.-based organization that monitors Islamist militant communiques. "We confirm that we still adhere to our pledge of allegiance to our sheikh and emir, Ayman al-Zawahri," the statement said, referring to the Egyptian who took on al Qaeda's leadership after U.S. special forces killed Osama bin Laden in 2011. http://news.yahoo.com/al-qaedas-north-african-wing-rejects-iraq-syria-171420596.html |

Kurds enter Syria from Turkey to fight jihadists Beirut (AFP) - Hundreds of Kurdish fighters have entered northern Syria to help battle jihadists besieging the Kurdish city of Ain al-Arab, a monitor said Tuesday. "At least 800 Kurdish fighters crossed the Turkish-Syrian border to help their comrades in Ain al-Arab (Kobane in Kurdish), which is under total siege by Islamic State jihadists," Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. A Kurdish Syrian activist said the flow of fighters came as the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), blacklisted in Turkey as a terrorist organisation, gave orders for Kurdish fighters to move to protect Kobane. http://news.yahoo.com/kurds-enter-syria-turkey-fight-jihadists-133410460.html |

Have they made the Benny Hill theme the official anthem of the Iraqi Army yet?
My hopes of ISIS burning out and the Iraqis getting it together are fading. Honestly though,it's probably best that they did capture those howitzers and M1s rather than if there had been bulk T-55s and Grads supplied to them.Half of Baghdad would be rubble if they had equipment they could operate and repair. |

Do Dead Bodies In The Street’s Of Iraq’s Capital Point Towards A Renewed Civil War?
Talk of a new civil war emerging in Iraq has already begun to be discussed by some media outlets. The Islamic State (IS) has been working for at least a year if not more to infiltrate its people into Baghdad to restart street fighting there. It already has extensive networks in and out of the capital city, which have allowed it to carry out several attacks a day in the province from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to sticky bombs to drive by shootings to larger car bomb operations. The Baathist Naqsibandi is active in northern Baghdad province as well. At the same time the Shiite militias have been mobilizing since at least January 2014 and are now seen in the streets of several neighborhoods and are deployed in the western section of the governorate around Abu Ghraib. Together these forces have been carrying out a series of executions and assassinations, and dumping the bodies on the streets. The recent increase in such incidents could be one indicator that a civil conflict is returning to the capital. http://musingsoniraq.blogspot.com/2014/07/do-dead-bodies-in-streets-of-iraqs.html |

Weeks of combat in Iraq show Shiite militias have few offensive capabilities
IRBIL, IRAQ — The sectarian Shiite militias that the government in Baghdad has dispatched to fill the void created by the collapse of the Iraqi army are proving ill-equipped for offensive operations intended to reverse gains by the radical Islamic State, Iraqi soldiers and military experts studying the current military situation have concluded. The inadequacy of the militias to turn the tide was demonstrated again on Wednesday six miles south of Tikrit, the central Iraqi city that Islamic State fighters seized June 11 and that Iraqi forces and Shiite fighters have been trying to reclaim for more than two weeks. Local residents and Iraqi media reported that the Iraqi military backed by militias attempted to push through the town of Awja toward Tikrit but were beaten back by heavy machine-gun and mortar fire from Islamic State positions. http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2014/07/16/233521/weeks-of-combat-in-iraq-show-shiite.html |

Thursday, July 17, 2014 17 July 2014 The most prominent development in Ramadi during the last three days has been the gunmen's deployment into the city's western and southern sectors. The gunmen's movements have resulted in intermittent clashes and have forced the districts' residents to once again move out towards Hit and Al-Baghdadi. As a result, the local government has once again called for tribal volunteers to join army and police forces in order to bolster the security forces in their efforts at thwarting the gunmen's advances. The 8th Brigade HQ has again been hit by mortar and artillery fire and intermittent clashes have been taking place throughout the night. In Fallujah, 9 residents were killed and 27 others were wounded in yesterday's fierce shelling of numerous districts within the city. Al-Garma has also been subjected to shelling and rocket-propelled grenade fire, resulting in the death of 2 residents with 7 others wounded. The town is still controlled by gunmen, while security forces are operating outside the town's perimeter. Security sources are claiming that the operations are being targeted at groups of gunmen. In western Anbar gunmen are still controlling the main towns as well as the crossing points at both the Syrian and Jordanian borders. Iraqi warplanes have attacked a number of positions in the region, saying that the they are targeting the gunmen groups. There has been an attempted assault on Haditha which is a fortified stronghold of the security and tribal forces and is the location of the Haditha Dam. Security forces there have been reinforced out of concerns that the gunmen would try to attack the town. Flyers have been distributed in Hit and Al-Baghdadi warning residents against siding with the security forces and fixing the end of Ramadan as the final deadline for their 'repentance' and their embracing the 'Islamic State' after resigning their government jobs. http://anbardaily.blogspot.com/2014/07/17-july-2014.html?spref=tw |
