Well I wasn't just refer to one, just in general. It's pretty common amongst others. But I guess the can would make sense

When I painted my Mk12 Mod1 clone, I shot the whole rig without thinking that I'd have a can for it. Shit changes. Got my 12th Model in the NFA clink until my Form 4 clears and I went and built my M&P 15-22 into a SEAL recce and had the barrel profiled to run the 12th Model. So when I painted it, I masked it off. If you go a page or two back, you'll see them.

Oooooh that looks good.  What colors did you use?  From the pics it looks like you used some kind of netting in certain areas?

Not an entire rifle, but I used matte black Aluma-Hyde II on a blem PSA upper receiver.  It was pretty gray
to begin with, as you can see in the before picture of it compared to a Spikes lower.

After fully curing, againwith the Spikes lower.  It's still a little lighter than the anodizing of the lower, but
it's significantly better than before (even if you can't tell as well from the pics - I'm not very good with
photography/lighting )

Receiver hanging to cure the next day:

I put the can of AHII in hot water, sprayed down the upper with brake cleaner, preheated the receiver with
a heat gun, hit it with the well-shaken AHII, hit it with the heat gun, let it hang for 20 minutes, then repeated.
It covered it well, no streaks or splatters, and the receiver looks great now.

This is my first AR pistol as well as the first AR that I've painted.  It's been a work in progress for a little over a year now.

When I originally painted the gun, I hadn't added the optic, MBUS set, light, or cheek rest.  I used the cargo net out of my wife's car.  Tan base coat with green and brown diagonal stripes. On this side you can see I did an additional tan stripe across the receiver because I thought on the whole it was too dark.

When I got around to doing the cheek rest and light, I decided to use the mesh bag some oranges came in.  The cargo net just never really did produce enough of a pattern for my liking.  I really like this mesh bag, however, and may have to go buy some more citrus fruit so I can re-do the rest of the gun.

I started with a base coat of Rustoleum Khaki, then sprayed stripes of Earth Brown and Primer Red.  After that I used cotton balls to randomly add in more Khaki, Earth Brown, Red Primer, and Rustoleum Oregano.

Added this to the rimfire forum but thought I'd post here, as well.

My dedicated .22lr assembly. I was going for  Mk12 Mod0-ish look, without breaking the bank. Yes, it is a fake can, but I think it looks ok. I used Rustoleum flat camo in khaki, green, and brown, and used dry grasses from our back field in a sort of pine-straw application.
