Hi, I got an AR10 with a 16-inch barrel. I want to put an optic on it for target practice. given that it's 308 with 16, I doubt anything longer than 600 yards. Any recommendations?

Any recommendations? I would want something with a 2 - 3 on the low end and 10 - 15 on the top. I like Athlon, but there are many others. How much you wanna spend? |

If the 16" was mine, and keeping with the more nimble aspect of a 16"... I would use a Illuminated LPVO 1-8 FFP ( older eyes )

I have two Vortex Viper PST II 2-10x's- one on a 5.56 and one on a .308. Perfect setup for me, from close up to over 800m.

I have the same thing - 16" Aero M5. I put a 1-8 LPVO on it. Works well for range use.

I've been using and enamored with the Trijicon Credo HX 1-6.
What an amazing LPVO. Day-bright dot, awesome glass, 1/4 moa adjustments. Really has turned out to be my favorite optic for the past couple years. Can be had at half your budget as well. |

Unless OP intends to CQB with his 308, I really don't get the LPVO recommendations. Perhaps it stems from the over-hyping that LPVO's have garnered over the years? LPVO eye box shrinks at upper magnifications and they choke off light. It is amazing what a difference just another X on the low end does for that, due to the larger objective. Obviously JMO. I'm sure 1x can be nice for short range woodsing but I have never had a problem picking up deer even with a fixed 4x, and I do not want to lose low light capability at dawn and dusk.

If your focusing on dawn and dusk, I've got a pile of dead coyotes/Deer and Black Bear that will also vouch for the Credo HX 1-6 for low light hunting. |

I’m a Credo fan as well, but I’ll offer up the 56mm objective 2.5-10x. Plenty of zoom for out to 500m, good for low light and clear Japanese glass

I went with a Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x40 Firedot TMR in a 20moa QD mount on mine.
Light, clear glass, good reticle, illuminated dot, mil dials, all make for a very versatile setup. The current version is the Mk3 HD, I think. Have hit out to 1000 yards with that setup and it's under 9 lbs with scope. |

OP I have three, 308 set rigs, SR25, Larue OBR and a custom Remington 700 bolt action, 16"
I originally went with large magnification scopes with 42 mm objectives. This proved to be too bulky and heavy for the final build. My Larue OBR was heavy as a pig, the OBR is a beast of a rifle to start with. I had a NF ATACR 4-16 x 50 on that rifle and a 4-16 x 42 ATACR on the SR25. The SR now has a NF NX8 1-8 on it and is all that I need on that rifle. I am planning to sell the Larue scope and go with another NX8 or possibly the Leupld MK5 2-10 My suggestion is to stay light and compact in size |

A high quality (top quality glass) 1-6 LPVO is a versatile optic for a general purpose rifle with 16" barrel. It can do whatever the shooter is capable of out to 500Yds.
I do agree that if you're planning on serious low light hunting then a larger objective will help out with that, but quality glass is still important. |
