Still need to find a grip and a selector, but for the most part, this one is finally done. I don't think it's a correct clone of anything, I just wanted a simple ranch carbine. I used the triangular charging handle because Harlan is out of the standard grey and I'm impatient.

Nodak upper & lower
DD LW barrel with FSB pinned by Adco
LMT extension (I dig the grey coating)
Stag LPK
Colt slickside bcg
Trigger guard and slip ring from Slim
J&T handguard (on the hunt for a shiny 6 or 7 hole set)

Nice!  Looks like the Colt SP1 Carbine I had, except mine had the aluminum stock.

Thanks!

Very nice rifle!

I'm currently waiting on my Moderators to get out of NFA jail before I complete my next build.

These are my first two completed retro rifle projects. Picked up a cheap, well worn, parts kit a few years ago and decided to keep the BTDT look. It's built on a McKay A1 lower. Because it's a disappointingly obvious reprofilied A2, I had no shame in "aging" it to match. The nicer one was built for my boss who wanted one after seeing mine. Ordered a pricier parts kit that was in really nice shape and put it on a proper NDS lower. Both are using Green Mountain barrels. Really sad to see the nicer one go, it gets handed over today....

McKay has since correct their A1 lowers. I bought one of their new ones several months ago after a very long wait for them to get them anodized. I built this A1 on it.

Duplicate post. I do not know how I did that. Sorry.

From what I can tell from your pics, our lowers are similar. It appears there is still a somewhat pronounced line around the relief cuts and the 'chatter' marks around the buffer tube area. That's what turns me off about their A1s. I love their A2s though and have several of them.

Nice job on both, but I like your BTDT work.  Can you post some close-ups of the worn areas?  How did you add the wear?  I'm considering adding wear to a lower to match an upper like yours.

McKay's finishing work is not nearly as good as the guys at Nodak Spud. Although I got a decent price on my lower (before the price hike), it still cost me nearly as much as a NDS lower would have. This is the only A1 lower I will have from McKay Enterprises. Now, Brownells is coming out with an A1 lower.

Thanks. I started by kicking it around a bit on the concrete, dropped various tools on it to get some scuffs and dings, and randomly whacked it with the tip of a file to get some nicks in the anodizing. The finish is super tuff and wasn't getting much progress so I resorted to lightly filling off the finish on the high spots to get down to some bare aluminum where I thought wear would have occurred. Next, I took some fine wet/dry sandpaper to soften around edges of where I filed and also sanded the larger flat areas and ridges which really helped to lighten up the grey. At the end, i scrubbed the whole thing with some fine steel wool to knock down any of the matte finish left and slicken it up. I attempted to match the scratching on the left side of the upper but was unsuccessful. Maybe I'll try to add to it later but overall I'm happy with my first attempt at it.

Yeah, I was pretty jacked to see their post about lowers being unveiled at shot show. Pretty excited to see what else they are adding to their retro lineup as well.

Well I always loved retros since I was a kid. And when I was a kid, retros were the actual rifles.
We'd think of retros at the time as the WWII (and older) surplus rifles and smg. But at the time, I was living in Italy. So all I could do as a kid was to drool on the American way of using and living firearms.

That (and having been born in Texas) surely prompted me to buy a shitload of firearms when the times were mature, even in the fucked up Italy (with all those permits and licenses I had to amass in order for it to happen).

But for the reader interested today in looking at an actual M16 (converted to semi only) used by an actual military (I think Philippine) I have still pictures of my older Colt M16A1 (model 613 for export). Will show wear and original color as I got it.

The light is a "FORCE Rechargeable Flashlight" and the mount is a "FORCE TACTICAL Flashlight Mount, Bayonet Lug Type"  the company's name is Sage International, Ltd, in Pontiac, Michigan.  Date on the paper work is 1990.  I have the box and papers, I will try to get some pictures.  The dang thing still works but runs out of juice pretty quick.  I got it in unused condition.

Sir!

But I still think I haven't managed to capture the shot.

Still going to have to try something else, something more creative. Something that tells a story.

My "sort of" BHD flavored GUU5/P clone.  Recently added an ARMS #2 and my ML3 that was sitting in the cupboard.  Not sure on the chin weld method but since putting this together it's been my go-to range carbine.  I love the simplicity, reliability and accuracy thus far.  I may keep my eyes out for an Aimpoint 5000 but only for s#!ts and giggles.

-Colt Gov't Carbine lower with N/1 stock
-Colt 6920 barrel, BCG, and CH
-Fulton (I think) upper
-Surefire 660L w/ Aimpoint barrel mount and Weaver ring

Out of no where and a bit of luck this gem came into my collection. 1964  serial #798. I've caught the retro bug big time! Top riffle is the 1964. Bottom one is my RR sp1 with a mutt kit. Got correct parts coming for it tho.

Btw if you want i can make a thread with detailed pictures of parts and proof marks. Entire gun was stripped sans any roll pins. Cleaned lubed and photographed. It seems some of this stuff is important for documentation for you retro guys.

Updated*** posted detailed pics under retro database.

Here's my retro builds (so far!)....

XM177E2-
Brownell's A1 upper on an 80% lower, reworked and engraved by Braceman. Barrel is 11.5" from J&T with pinned/welded ar15sport moderator.

M16A1-
Another Brownell's upper on a cheap Anderson lower. Barrel is ar15sport, furniture is all original USGI surplus. Bayonet was NOS GenCut with TWB marked scabbard (not shown).

I've since replaced the type D stock with a type E trapdoor stock and flash hider has been replaced with correct A1 birdcage.
The type D stock and three prong are going to be used on my next project, a 605.
