I know the subject has probably been beat to death, but what is the best way to mount a flashlight to a standard (non-Ruger) AR15 without rails?

I used this on my KISS carbine for quite a while.

I bought a short picatinny rail and just mounted it to the forend with the hardware and some washers to span the holes in the handguard.

Not sure what you mean by standard Non-Ruger. What handguard is on your rifle?

This mounts to the Front Sight Base (assuming you have a typical AR with a FSB)

Easy Peasy to install or remove.

Has a 2nd mount point if you wanted a lazer or similar.

If you can find one, the Impact Weapons Components TMC works really well. The current version can only accept a ring or a Scout pattern light, but the older version could accept those plus a picatinny light like a TLR-1 or X300. I have the old version and used it to mount a TLR-1 on a set of A2 handguards. Would recommend trimming the heat shield to allow the screw tabs to clamp to the plastic instead of the heat shield. Something like this paired with a Protac HLX would be a nice setup.

Does it have MLOK? or is it the old style hand guard?

Just get a $25 Magpul MOE handguard and you'll have Mlok slots to mount whatever you want.

ETA: This is what I have done with my FSB style uppers and they've been solid for a weapon light and sling mount.

Problem is, IWC hasn't been making anything for awhile now and it doesn't sound like they're goin to anytime soon from what I understand.

Magpul drop in handguards with mlok for the light body. Then drill some holes for the touch pad.

Still have one of those on an older AR15 (before the quad rail days).  Works like a champ.

I have these as well on some rifles. Simple and they work.

Most of mine have mlok or quads but for my more retro stuff, I like the IWC mount-n-slot scout mounts. They are a little scarce these days, but they pop up on the EE from time to time.
