[Last Edit: hrzn]
I just noticed that there are heavy wear marks in the chrome lining of a brand new bolt carrier that has never been shot before. The chrome lining looks scratched or rubbed. I've never seen this before in a brand new bolt carrier. All the ones I've seen before are completely smooth. I don't think the bolt carrier is used as the carrier rails look new. Do you think it is defective? Would this make it fail earlier than expected? Just wondering if I should try getting an RMA or if it's something I shouldn't worry about. Thanks!

Here are the pictures: Pictures of the bolt carrier

Sure it's new? Looks like someone was scraping at that spot with something hard.

Shouldn't cause issues. Whether I send it back would depend on price and brand.

If it was a PSA carrier for 50 bucks, I'd deal with it.

250$ carrier from LMT, I'd send them an email.

How does it shoot?

If it bothers you a good retailer will return or exchange.    I would just carry on.

Lousy plating job. Weak or contaminated solution.

Likely to wear through gas rings quickly.

Looks like cracking or crazing of the plating.

Surface finished is compromised.

Look at the bearing surface of the carrier visible in that pic.  Most carrier groups take a while to show any appreciable wear over the entire carrier itself, and that is most likely from heavy cleaning.  The majority of use or wear is going to appear on the slides because they are the only part that are contacting inside of the upper while cycling.  Yours looks used.  Not a lot, but used nonetheless.

I wonder if it experienced hydrogen embrittlement during the chroming process.

I'm normally a "just run it" kind of guy, but i'd return that one.

There are a lot of places on a bolt carrier that could be flawed and I'd say it doesn't matter. Run that shit. That ain't one of them. I think you have a valid concern.

The gas rings don’t run in the area below the cam pin slot.

This.

They do each time the bolt is R&Rd for cleaning.

Did you run your finger through it and it feels smooth? If so, I'd just run it. Otherwise, I would return it.

Thank you so much for all your comments! They were really useful. I engaged the vendor to get the carrier checked out.
