There are a few mistakes and omissions that were never corrected when this "guide" was created. And some of the info was supposition, not fact based.
But overall not too bad a guide. Scale between 1 and 10, 10 being great, I never gave this guide more then a 6. Just my 2 pennies and worth whatcha paid. |

Busy today, but here are a few:
No mention of vp (only) marked 1/14 barrels,,, late 601s ( vp 12 barrels may also be found on 601s as replacements when it was determined that the 1/14 barrels were not up to snuff) No mention of vp (only) marked 1/12 barrels,,, early 602s (these have a small 12 stamped at the 6 o'clock position on the barrel about and inch or so behind the FH.) No evidence that MP barrels were made in 1965, but plenty showing 66 and 67 based on deep research done by former member willp and others here..(PS, this was also a transitional period when the FSB received the drain hole under the front sight pin)( and also the transition of forge flash remaining or being removed on the FSB) Green type C stocks??? Type C stocks were the 1st to be dye impregnated black..., Type B stocks started as brown fiberglass just like the type A stocks then were painted either green or black depending on who the end user was. In some cases B were painted green 1st, then factory painted black. The 1 I had was black over brown. My HG set was factory green over brown, then factory painted black. (overspray went behind the heat shields indicating done at Colt before the shields were installed.) A few members have these. Same with PGs, some were black over green, some were black over brown No mention of the early "full circle, or many circle" (however you want to refer to it) mag release buttons as opposed to the later "circular" buttons. And to get more technical, there are 2 versions. Both versions have 5 ribs above and below the hole, and 2 full ribs and to the left and right of the hole. One version, if you use a magnifying glass, the ribs are straight up and down (same thickness at the top and down at the bottom, the 2nd version, each rib "tapers" out slightly as it goes down. So there is a start. ETA, IIRC one of our members found written info in a GI manual dated 1966 that stated something to the effect that early bend carbon steel gas tubes are now to be replaced with stainless steel (early bend) gas tubes. So early carbons were likely used up to 1966, and again IIRC, willp also found this info by inspecting real deal actual military rifles. Even tho early bend stainless tubes seem to be plentiful, they had the shortest life span. ETA2: the date line for dimpled pins (referred to above as with holes and without holes) and mag release lever may be incorrect. We all assumed (including me) back when this guide was posted, that early rifles all had dimples. However a member who has been able to go thru many dozens if not hundreds of demills finds dimpled pins on later rifles then listed above, not so much on early ones.. |

Thank you for the corrections

BTW, I need to add this. I am in NO way, shape, or form "bashing" the original guide above. The member or members who worked on it made a valiant effort. Some info in the guide was what was known back then and new info surfaced. Some of it was known and maybe just "overlooked". But like most all reference books ever done, there are always mistakes or cases of new info surfacing that need to be added or deleted.
Kudos to the author of the guide. |

Being the owner of an original 602 upper I'm saddened to see that the VP 12 barrel wasn't mentioned. GM and HRA stuff is missing also but that's a whole different story.

View Quote willp had started research on them but shortly after is when he "stepped" away from AR/M16 research to go into a new hobby. MrM1A1 (and a few others) took the ball and expanded on H&R and GM rifles and did a great job. It IS a sticky. Once again I have to point to the member who had examined dozens into the hundreds of demills and found interesting things with GM and H&R stuff too. I'm hoping he's gonna write a book one day using personal observations from all those demills. I keep trying to convince him to do so.... |

While we’re tagging stuff, I’ve been looking for a mod to tag this and nobody has done it. Hopefully you can help. Many thanks: https://www.ar15.com/forums/AR-15/The-Complete-ArmaLite-AR-15-Prototype-Guide/123-743191/?page=1&anc=7949861#i7949861 |

Where do the following barrels fall?
- VP M1 - VP Thanks! |
|
|
The VP M1 is likely in the latter part of that 1959-1962 era and the VP 12 would probably be 1963. Some have said the very last 601s had VP 12s but I’m unsure.

I have a vp with the small m1 in front of the fsb on the top of the barrel(no c). I also have had a demolished barrel section with a duckbill on it with the same markings. I have this vp m1 barrel on my 602 now.

I pulled these together this morning thinking that these may be of some use as we are now seeing some crossing of "modern" AR gear into the retro world given how long the AR15's been in service...

I posted this a couple of mins ago elsewhere, re posting here ...looks like the place.
I haven't been on this site for a while, don't know if I'm in the right place. Back (10 years???) some did a group buy on the early proto type front sight to build an early AR15. I see the viet nam rifle are selling at a very good price, so I was wondering what an insurance value or reasonable selling price might be for these builds?? If I remember, each build was kinda unique depending on the builder. any assist is appreciated, Ron |

Regarding barrel markings, I owned SN 714 which I believe was 1965 manufacture. I have read the first regular manufacturing lot (after an initial small batch one could consider a pre-production run) was for 500 so this would be from the second production lot if that info is correct.
My contribution is that it was marked with a "W" and "14". Was not a 1:12 twist. I sold it about 25 years ago. :( |

No evidence that MP barrels were made in 1965, but plenty showing 66 and 67 based on deep research done by former member willp and others here..(PS, this was also a transitional period when the FSB received the drain hole under the front sight pin)( and also the transition of forge flash remaining or being removed on the FSB) Green type C stocks??? View Quote They asked for it. Home run. |
