Looking at picking up another AR. Which is better Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Tactical or Spikes Tactical with the Spikes having a Spider Bullet lower with CTR stock and MOE grip with and the upper being 16" Mid LE w/12" Bar rail. Just wondering which to buy..

I'd go with the Smith. They're producing a high quality mid level gun at a decent price.

I have and like both.  Both are well built.  The spec sheet is in Spkes favor however.  If MPIMilspecGoldplated is what you are after go Spikes.

Well i think 1100 for a spikes is high.  That S&W tac is worth 1000.

Smith.

The difference to me is in the barrel.  The Smith has a 4140 1:8 twist barrel.  The Spikes is 4150 1:7 twist.

If shooting heavier or high grain bullets then the 1/7 twist is better. What do you plan on shooting? The ammo you buy at your local sporting goods store 50-70grn will shoot perfectly fine out of a 1/8 twist barrel. 75grn and + go with the 1:7 tiwst.

Edit: oh also I'd choose smith over spikes.. I'd choose anything over spikes for The same reason as finslayers

4150 is a higher grade steel.  It's more durable, and used on military spec rifles for it's durability and longer shelf life when receiving hard usage.  The 1:7 twist will handle higher loads, but so will the 1:8.  In terms of use, you'd be fine with either, in terms of "better" would go to the Spikes.

Both are great rifles and will be awesome shooters. I would think the Spikes would have a better resale value over the Smith.

Get either...it TRULY doesn't matter. Both are far more than adequate for your needs.

Many of the posters here OVER THINK  minor differences between models and manufacturers.

Get whichever one apppeal to YOU.  But if it was my money I would go to a different shop...BOTH of those are higher than they should be. Be aware you can buy a Colt for a grand or a bit more.  SHOP some of the AR sites online.

+1 I thought smith and spikes were cheaper than 1k.

I would get the smith because of the 1:8 twist.

After owning a spikes and a PSA middy.

For the money, the PSA is a better deal.

just my $0.02 as they shoot about the exact same, shit probably parts sourced from the same place.

Spikes. The few S&Ws I've picked up haven't impressed me.

Of  the two mentioned I'd pick Spikes. Mainly because of better specs and I own a few and they have been 100%. Haven't owned a SW though. Except the .22

But as mentioned, personally I'd take PSA over both.

I have had both. Spikes is built better. M16 bcg higher quality barrel 1/7 twist

And why is everyone so pissed about what spike said to psa? He asked a question. Ford and chevy shit on each other all the time

Well shoot, I didn't know that made Spikes products worse.

I love my Spikes lower, it has been rock solid through 2-3k rounds, so not too much yet but no problems so far. I've fired my friends M&P and it was a solid rifle as well, I just liked how my lower fit onto my BCM upper much better than the M&P.

People are making to big of a deal over the spikes psa deal.  It really comes down to imo in this order price specs reputation availability.  And when i say reputation i dont mean spike called out psa on proof testing 6.8 barrels. I mean does the company have a reputation of reliability and customer service.

Here is my personal experience. I had a M&P15 but i wanted a full mil spec rifle. Was nothing wrong with it was a great rifle but lacked features i wanted. So then i got a spikes lower then i wanted a spikes upper to match but they are on intergalatic back order. So instead i went with a slightly more expensive but available BCM

Few of my friends have complete spikes rifles if you could remove the logos you would never tell them a part from ky bcm.

$1100 is too High for a spikes.....i mean they are $850ish on spikes website and they are right around $799 at all of my local dealers....I just bought a brand new colt for $1173 OTD at wal-mart.............

Edit...I didnt see the BAR rail and ctr stock and stuff

If you factor in the bar rail ctr and anything else that it might have 1100 isnt too bad. Thats about what they sell for at spikes

I grew up about 10 miles away from S&W and their revolvers are legendary.
My K-frame target is a fine piece that shoots better than I can point it.
IMO, their AR's are just average.

I would go with a Spikes.

Op both of the rifles are quality if the MP is $1000 and the spikes is 1100  compare the specs. The spikes is a mil spec rifle the MP is not. Does that matter to you? If not then it doesn't really matter which rifle you get either will make you happy.

It wasn't long ago spikes was the flavor of the month, before that it was bcm  now it is psa. Psa makes a mil spec rifle too but they are doing it cheaper than everyone else for base rifles.

And don't listen to the people bashing spikes because of what he said about psa. Spikes personal opinion of his competition does not make spikes rifles lesser quality.  If anything people should like when competing companies bicker it usually produces a better cheaper product

your spikes lower is most likely made at the same place as most other lowers, I believe at one time they were made by Aero Precision.

My complete spikes rifle has seen 3-4k rounds, and my PSA actually runs better, I should attribute that to the rifle buffer though.

Well, as you can see, those that own either are pretty passionate about their brand. Just comes down to what specs are important to you and who has it. Both have lifetime warranties and both are solid choices. Both are also modular and accept accessories and parts from the same manufacturers. You really can't go wrong. Also depends on your timeframe and what's available.
