I had a chance to dig out my uppers with brakes and I don't know what to do with them... Did you guys just sell them off? Is there a way to "snip the tip" with out ruining the barrel?

Serious question- isn't it still legal to own them so long are they aren't attached to a lower?

If yes, might as well keep it/them in the slight chance of repeal.

You could snip the tip and have it crowned by a competent gunsmith as long as you maintain the legal length of 16"

Now is a barrel usually 16" to the beginning or end of the threads?

The end of the threads. So if the threads are cut off, it's too short.
If you can cut around the pin and get the comp off, you might be able to install a thread protector and pin on.
Now a brake might be legal, (grey area,) a comp is not.

a barrel is measured from the breech face of the bolt to the muzzle......if the muzzle device is removable....it dosen't count. Basically a barrel blank 16 inches long when fitted with a barrel extension and measured from the breech face will be 16 1/8th inches long.

Mine went for a ride out of state as well. I get to exercise them while I'm on vacation.

You don't have to cut off the threads if you go this route. .. A precision grind will do the trick.  Don't mess with the chamfer though. ..

Public FYI,

Bushmaster's NY compliant XM15 uses a 14.5" M4 profile bbl with a 1.5" blind pinned muzzle break to bring length to 16".  Simply cutting off the brake would still leave you outside the law due to the short barrel.  I assume that's a popular model around here.  Break out your tape measures to be sure of where you stand.

You can pin and weld a thread protector in place of another muzzle device.

Lol, to be honest, never saw the point of having one.  Not like I own a bayonet for an AR, and probably wouldn't use one.  Now on a Mosin, that's another story!!

Note that horses with bayonets were banned in Europe around the year 800 by decree of Charlemagne.  Users of the previously legal Unicorn complied with the new laws by using horses and hand-carried lances.   Following that corrupt politicians cried that carrying a lance on a horse was not in the spirit of the ban, and coined the term "loop hole".    In the centuries to follow, it was proven that the hand-held lance on a horse was in fact superior to the Unicorn; as a result the Unicorn fell out of fashion and in fact went extinct.   In hindsight, Charlemagne should have left well enough alone.
