A reader who knows a lot more than I do about guns (sorry, drill sergeant, it's a gun) clears up the question of whether AK-47s (in use by GIs in Iraq) could use U.S. ammo:
The ak-47 does use the 7.62 X 39. However, the m-60 and the m-14 use the 7.62 X 51. These rounds are not interchangable, as the second number indicates the length of the cartridge case, in mm.
The 7.62 X 39 is similar in power to a 30.30 while the 7.62 X 51 is the military equivilant of the .308 winchester, which is similar in power to the 30.06.
