The Vermont Agency of Agriculture says a single feral pig that was suffering from a viral disease that can infect a number of other animal species was shot and killed earlier this year in Lyndonville.

The agency said Thursday the pig killed in March tested positive for what is known as the PRV infection.

It's unclear where the feral pig came from. Feral pigs are not native to North America, but in the last 30 years they have expanded their range from 17 to 39 states.

Officials in Vermont are unaware of any other feral pigs in Vermont.

Nationally, feral pigs are considered one of the most serious wildlife problems. They prey on a number of native animals and can out-compete native wildlife for food such as acorns and beechnuts.

It only takes a few months for a domestic pig to turn feral.
