What's the function of the barrel 'detailing' on the M4 rifle? I'm talking about the fact that the barrel is not smooth along it's length, but instead have 'thinner' areas. Does this have to do with barrel cooling/strength?

Johan,
the 'detailing' (also known as 'grenade cuts') is for mounting an M203 grenade launcher under the barrel. I'll have a look and see if I can find a pic. rgds, SteveA ETA : found it!

Excellent, thanks. Now I know! I'm allowed to apply for my FAC in May, and I'm already looking forward to spend some of my hard-earned cash on some rifles. Always loved the EBR's so it may just be my first choice... |

Do you know why they decided on a 14.5" barrel instead of a 16" one??
Because on a 16" barrel, the bayonet doesn't fit

The barrel is also thinner under the handguards of an M4 barrel to save weight.
