Tried to do a search but didn't come up with anything. Looks like I will be spending a bit more time in Ames, as my son will be going there in a year. However, we are going up quite a bit now and will have some time to kill on some of the trips.

What shops should I be headed to visit in the area?

JAX's on the westside.  Jacobson's in Story City.  Lindy's in Boone.  Otherwise you'll need to hit the metro.

Never dealt with them beyond a phone call but Central Iowa Impact in Boone is an option.

Forgot about them.  Indoor range with a decent selection of guns.

Central Iowa Impact is great, both their shop and their range.

Is Whatcha Smokin in Luther still open? They're my go-to stop after I come back from the range

Oh well. I'm there to eat, not look at architecture.

Then it won't surprise you that it's owned by a Professor of Industrial Technology or some such.  But you might already know that based on your workplace.

I think the ambiance is nice but the food sucks.

I miss Jethros, it was so much better.

Cornbread is but with prices to match

It was sold by the original owner to a Des Moines firm a year or so ago.

Well phooey.  That reduces my desire to eat there again.  I really liked it when we were there.  They had some sauce in the back that was some sort of "not really a secret" that had some extra heat to it.  Good Stuff.

Some thread creep here - back on the original topic - you've got a couple of other shops within an hour - Daryl's over in State Center and Controlled Chaos down by Baxter.  You'll never quite know what you'll stumble on in Daryl's.

Always good to have places to eat too...makes hitting the shops more fun. My son been hurt and hasn't made it back up there but hope to make it back up there soon. I'll be hitting the shops then..

Thanks again, and if anyone has anything else to throw up, I'm all ears.

I would just stop at JT Guns on Merle Hay Road in Des Moines.  It's on the way to Ames.  JT's got tons of ammo at reasonable prices(yes, 9mm and 5.56) and the best selection of firearms.

Nice little shop.  Emphasis on little.  On Saturdays that place can get very crowded.  I've bought a three guns from him over the years.
