Pawn shops are generally not a bargain hunters dream. They get merchandise for a pittance from people who are desperate for money. They charge a legal amount of interest for the loan (pawned items are actually "collatteral") and then if the owner does not come back and pay up in the specified time, the merchandise is owned by the pawn shop. They then place it for sale, naturally for as much as they think they can get. It is their business to know a lot about the values of many different categories of merchandise, and they are usually VERY knowledgeable. They seldom get burned (stolen merch. mostly) and rarely undervalue an item. If a good deal is found there, it will not be there long, and will be right after the item has come out of pawn.
As to handgun sales, I've been told that Michigan law prohibits pawn shops in dealing in handguns, but I would imagine that would be pawning, not selling new. They may not allow that either, unsure.
