yallhallaforge, checked out both sites and felt they hit more on the "art side" of knife making, for my requirements

I sent him a  request yesterday afternoon for a custom Christmas knife for wife and he answered at 8pm with shouldn't be a problem, what's your idea?

A couple emails later and a paper sketch and he said he should be able to start on it.

So far 100% happy, I will continue this thread since I started it for folks to use for research in the future

Cool. Brendan is a good guy. I've known him for about 13 years.

SO I sent the basic design to him,

"About 6 inch blade with 6 inch kitchen profile handle.

3/16 full tang and spine tapered to an edge for slicing mostly vegetables and raw meat, occasional (couple times a year) will be used to chop cooked and sliced smoked pork/beef

for the handle I would love wood cherry/walnut whatever you think would compliment the knifes look or feel (if it will hold up to almost everyday use)

Not dishwasher only hand washed.

High carbon steel to get a good heat treat and hardness for toughness and edge retention.

As for blade look? Old skool weathered/acid prepped, something nice and old world looking"

Will keep ya'll up to date

So I just did a gas station deal in front of dunking donuts

It is very nice and feels perfectly balanced unlike normal chef knives. I will try it after Christmas and give an AAR then. As well as moar pictures as my wife tries it out.

Super nice guy and very talented.

Well, how'd she like it?

[#15]
oops I thought I posted it.

She absolutely loved it, used it all day and her sister is in love with it also,  as well as others that a few have Shiny $500 knives, they said it actually out performed there $$$ chef knives

Lisa gave very strict usage and care instructions to everyone that basically said use here on this, with this and I will clean it

She has two more smaller ones coming to match patena and wood for valentines day, basically  a paring and carver.
Told him to make them look like they were made by same Smith in same style, from same shop

Thank you for the heads up! Great guy to talk with!

I will be checking out the other Smith and another one from here locally this coming year,  to see what they can offer.

To support local talent.

I highly recommend him for what he did for me.

I will update in a month or so

On the edit: they were very impressed with edge retention, after all day cutting and chopping, it sliced through rip red tomatoes with just the wt of it...two ?? ??

Not to be rude or pry, but do you mind saying how much that set you back?

It looks great, by the way.

Oopsie.....forgot to add pictures

After heat treat

All these knives are very specific for 1 use not an everything knives.
After cooking for 40+ years she just wants quality now.

The 1st knife is as sharp as it was a month ago, perfect heat treat and edge shape for its purpose.

On to pics

Hadn't thought about that. It's more of a personal congratulations (we deployed together and he's my best friend) Maybe "FAFO" or something from our old unit.

Preferably Rutherford, Coffee, Warren county areas but Davidson etc would work too.

Here is her complete set, we were in The new house working and her best friend was there helping her, so I said "have you seen Lisa's knives?"

She said no, lisa smiled and I said,  I'll go get them, perfect time for last knife, classic chef style 12"

So I showed her gf each one and then said"all she lacked was classic chef knife" and handed lisa the knife, she actually teared up

It is light, perfect balance and a razor
