Consider this another extension of my job hunting related networking. I'm out of work at the moment and hoping my brothers and sisters at ARFCOM might be able to help me out in some way. I am a computer and network technician by trade, but am willing to consider just about anything. BRD is expensive and hard to support without that income. If any of you happen to have any leads or are the hiring people at somewhere around here, I would sure appreciate the help. PM for personal info/resume etc.

I don't know about Lafayette, but if you wanted to move towards the New Orleans area you can usually find a decent tech job on the Mississippi gulf coast.  The gaming industry is booming there.  When I was between jobs a few years ago I did lots of contract work mainly setting up small networks and stuff like DNS server configuration in the area due to lots of businesses springing up.  I haven't really looked into it recently even though I'm going to be laid off soon, I've decided to join the military before I'm too old not to.

I've never really thought about that. I've always considered myself a jack of all trades when it comes to computers and networking. I build them, fix them, network them, have some experience programming, have done a little of everything to do with networking, from small home networks to 1000+ station corporate networks.

I live in Carencro and you sound like one of my neighbors. Basically your best bet is to leave the Lafayette area. Probably not what you wanted to hear. Most everybody I know goes to Houston.
One place you might check is W Industries on Kaliste Saloom. I have a friend who is an IT Network
Specialist for NEC here in this area. They work his ass off and run his butt all over the place.  My
neighbor is a software engineer and she has to drive to Alexandria everyday to work. You might even think about a different line of work.

The red part is the best idea I've heard all day. But, that doesnt take into consideration the reason I moved into this hell hole in the first place. Came here because my mom had a tumor in her head, and needed some help. Gave up the good job, the house, the everything to come down here and try to be a good son for my mom. Since that time, I'm broke, out of work, have no place to live, nowhere to go, and no way to get there. Hence me staying in the Lafayette area for a while. W Industries, what is that? Do you have any more information such as a phone number, website or e-mail address? Driving to Alexandria wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit, before I moved here I was driving from west Fort Worth to east Dallas every day for work. 55 miles of bumper to bumper traffic. Really changes your outlook on driving and things.. :-P Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into that.


ETA: Your friend who works for NEC sounds like he's doing something that would interest me. Wonder if they need any more help?

I am not in that field but an engineer in BR but if i see or hear of anything anywhere, i will post it. have you checked out BR newspaper online or even alexandrias?

I work in the oilfield, and there are always guys coming to the rigsites working on networks for companies like Caprock etc. Dunno if you feel like working with oilfield trash like me, but the oilfield is busy right now and they're probably looking for people. That's the only company i can think of right offhand that does that kind of work, but there are several around here. Worth a shot. Good luck.

I've looked into the oilfield work before, seems they have computers running just about everything there. CajunMojo, if you could do me the favor of finding out if those computer guys are contracted in or employed by the owners of the oilfield equipment they're repairing, I would be most appreciative. Company names, websites, a guy that works there, anything at all would be helpful.

Zack, I won't be going to work for a few weeks, but i know that the guys who work on the equipment are employed buy the companies that rent the equipment. Like i said off the top of my head.. Caprock is the only company name that i can think of right now. Check www.caprock.com   That's the only name that sticks in my head, but there are many. If you call them and explain you're looking for a job, maybe they can givee you the name of competitors if they don't have anything available. The website says they're based out of Houston, but they may have offices in Lafayette. Most of the oilfield ralated industries do. Good Luck.

Zack, there's a company on Ambassador Caffery called Global Technology that contracts people out to Caprock and other companies.  I'm working through them right now and they're a good company to work for because they will train you.  Hope this helps.

Zack, You do live near me and my friend with NEC lives near you down Magellan Rd. Sorry I coulda told you NEC wasn't hiring. They have cut back his workforce to only about 4 techs.
You are going to have to work up a good resume and pound the pavement.
The oilfield work is basically digital microwave and cellular work. Some of the big names are
Caprock and Petrocom. I would search some more on the web for tech jobs in this area.
W Industries on Kaliste Saloom Rd. basically does industrial automation writing programs to automate offshore platforms and subsea production systems. They are working on a project for my offshore platform now but the main work they do out of Houston. Lots of foreign engineers are coming in and taking some of the jobs. Lemme do some research and get back to you.

The Lake Charles American Press has a help wanted ad for a computer programer at Fort Polk. Might want to check on that. You may also check with Turner Industries in Baton Rouge. Busy time of year and they may be taking on extra IT guys.
