I would not move north of Indianapolis. Taxes are higher, scenery is not as pretty....

Most of the hills start south of Indy. For a lowered cost of living, My first choice for you would be somewhere near Bedford (Lawrence County). It is pretty much the midpoint between Indy and Louisville. Not to mention that Lawrence County's Sheriff will sign-off for machineguns and sound suppressors while you wait.

I always liked the Hoosier National Forest area through I-64. Nice and hilly. For politics, I like having Hostettler as my Congressman. Sure beats the crazy stuff going on out here in Washington. Don't think I'll be here too long, even if I do like the mountain scenery.

I lived in WNY( Chautauqua county) for 20 years, spent 5 years bouncing around the world in the navy and settled here in Orange county in 03. Bedford is only 20 minutes from me and I agree that would be one of the better places to live down here.

Thanks. This really helps. There are a lot of wonderful things about the area where I now live, however with a race for governor now heating up, I expect to see a heightened attack on our 2nd amendment rights for purely political reasons. We already have one of the toughest AWB laaws in the country, and it can only get worse.

+1 Draw a line starting at Bedford, from Bedford go SW to Loogoote, to Evansville, to Rome, to Lousiville, to Salem and back to Bedford. Somewhere in there you will find your center. The WORST Indiana has to offer is halfway between Indy and Ft. Wayne. |

I agree, southern Johnson, Brown, Green, Davies...and that county that the Comissioner lives in..can't remember it? South central Indiana in general is a great place to live..or at least I like it. |

It is flat for quite a ways north of Indy but if taxes are lower than in Tipton County, I would be surprised.

Brown County is your best bet. I live here. As far as ranges go make your own if you buy land. That is what I did. I shoot Machineguns constantly at my house. Also I could hunt right from the front porch as well if I wanted to. You'll love it. Woods, Hills, Fields, Everything a country folk would want.

Well I have 55acres and all my neighbors have big plots of ground around me so there are no real close neighbors. Now, the Sheriff has been called before when I first started doing this but after they came and checked me out then having to go to the callers house and explain everything is ok, now no more complaints. The M60 seems to echo for miles in the hills. Found out the caller was a mile away.

I hosted an AR15.com group shoot on my 43 acres followed by a FR&I Level II pistol class two weeks later. There were easily thousands of rounds fired during those events. People live less than a half mile away. Other than a few nosey neighbors inviting themselves in to see what was going on, the county sheriff told me he never got a call of complaint about the noise. Around here, gunshots are as common a background noise in the country as the cawing of crows or the mooing of cows.

Definitely check out the corridor running north/south within 50 miles of I65 from Louisville to Indy. Knob Creek Range is 25 minutes from downtown Louisville, and there are a few rifle/pistol clubs in the area. The scenery in Southern Indiana is top notch and the hospitality of the natives can't be beat.
Any idea what you want to spend per acre?? That would help as prices vary drastically from less than a thousand per to many times that. |

Haven't worked that out yet, but everything you're all saying makes me think I need a good sized parcel. I can't wait to get out and check it over, as soon as the weather turns in the spring.  Many thanks for the great information. Now I can start with a plan. I grew up in northwest ohio after we moved from norhtern california, but that part of ohio's too flat for me. Where I lived I could look west across indiana and see illinois.  When I moved to upstate new york I fell in love with the mountains. It's going to be great to have the hills and not have a Clinton as my senator. |

I take both of those to work every day, they both are really popular for bikers. Just dont take the corners wide. Property here in Orange county is sky rocketing because a lot of people think the proposed Casino justifies it. |

I'd recommend Lawrence or Greene county, but only because that's where I do my running around. I don't recommend Monroe as I think they have higher taxes. Plus, you don't want to live that close to Bloomington. If you want to do competitive pistol shooting, I think you have to get down close to Louisville to be close to that. There is a free (but small) shooting range over between Sullivan and Dugger. Look for Minnehaha (sp?) on a map and that's where it is. There's also a free one over to the east somewhere. I live about an hour from both. There are pistol ranges in Indy. If you get too far east, past Seymour, I think it gets flat. If you get too far southwest, it flattens out some. South central tends to be hilly.
I live in northwest Lawrence county and can be to the middle of Indy in about 1.5 hours. I think it's about 2 hours to Louisville. 1.5 hours to Terre Haute. 4-5 hours to Chicago, about 4.5 hours to St. Louis. Highway 45 between Bloomington and Crane Naval sucks for driving often, lots of accidents. If you hunt, there's not a whole lot of public land here, and from what I've seen, what exists is busy in deer season. From what I've seen, Brown county would not be a bad option. Seems more forested, more hilly, between Bloomington and Columbus. Closer to Indy than me (as the crow flies). Oh yeah, there's also Monroe Reservoir, which is a pretty big lake that doesn't cost much to use. I think if you use the more remote ramps it doesn't cost anything. It seems like land prices around and in Monroe county are going up because every big chunk is purchased to be developed. J |

Check out Jackson or Washington county. I live in Jackson County and the motorcycling is great any direction you go,
Really good riding in southeast Indiana between Madison, Versailles and Lawrenceburg. Plus I'm 100 miles to Cincinnati, 75 miles to Indianapolis and 50 miles to Louisville. |

If things go well next weekend, I'll be picking up a new scope for my AR. I might be out there soon after that to sight it in. I'd need to bring some 9mm and my new(used) G17. I'd actually like to sight the scope in early then maybe predator call in Minniehaha, but I need to find out the rules there. Maybe you can inform me? Do I have to sign in to small game hunt there?

"Minnehaha" is how they spell it up in Minneapolis/St.Paul MN. IN-46 from Columbus going west through Brown County is a nice drive--2 lane with some hills. Enough hills to have a ski slope. 50 going west of Seymour and north on 446 to Bloomington was nice too (at least it was 20 years ago). I haven't really been south of there much, but there's a ski place down in Paoli too. Definitely stay south of Indianapolis if you want hills. |
