I am ready to build my first AR, (figuratively, not physically).
I need someone to help me shop for parts, and someone to help me put it together. I've stumbled around in the build-it-yourself forum for a bit, but I don't know that I want to do this more than once, so I guess I'm looking for the 'speed course' instead. Hopefully, someone who can live with my brown-gun mentality... Or, maybe just a point in the direction of a shop who is easy to deal with, and who doesn't mind lots of questions from a newbie. |
Well the "family" can help you build it....I'd start with iblis and teknic for parts. |
First things first, do you know what configuration you want? The parts you want will dictate the vendors you buy from. I would definitely start with a lower from Iblis or Teknic though and if you know the configuration either of them may have a lot of the other parts you want.
This is why I figured asking for help first might be wise. The amount I don't know, could quickly end up in frustration for iblis, teknic, or whoever else.
Yes, I'm sure of most of the features I want, but the majority of proper terminology eludes me. As far as name brands go, I'm not smart enough on that either. Guess I need LOTS of help. |
Go to the AR Builders forum look around in the picture threads...find a picture of something close to what you want. as for brand names..... MEGA is local and makes a very nice lower and upper (thats what I have on mine). Teknic and Iblis both sell them and are VERY helpfull |
BAH! Just spend the weekend pointing at parts (of guns!) that you like and we'll tell you what they are and where you can get them. ETA- I have a couple of ideas that may appeal to your brown gun mentality let me see what I cna come up with in the next couple of days. |

This is true, there may be a few ARs at the shoot....the ar15.com shoot......hrmmmmm |
Thanks I've done the picture search thing to death, and haven't seen anything exact. I think I could describe most of it to someone fairly easily..... it'll be much less "tactical" than what most of the pics show. I like the clean KISS plan, but am also willing to spend in some areas too. (trigger is a biggy for me, reliabilty, use/lifespan, shoots straight, etc..) What is the best way to 'go shopping'? Contact them online, or do I have to go to gunshow and wait in lines? |
Both list their standard prices online, once you find something you want just call either of them...tell them you will get them banned if they don't give you a good price and VOILA! |
Thanks. I'll postpone anymore purchases, (already ordered a couple of small items for it), until after the shoot. |

This may be contradictory to the popular opinion. To each his own. I got my last kit & first form M1S and I'm happy with it. It shoots better than I do. I have put over 4k rounds of Wolf down the pipe and still hits other peoples Tannerrite @ 100yds off hand. It was cheap yet it is reliable. .
It's one option I thought I throw out there, but supproting to locals may be a better idea. I got this one before I knew them. Just my $.02 |
I've actually heard good reviews on them too. A kit would require you to buy a lower which you could still buy from a local |

You thought correct. My bad computer FU. |

Nothing like literal intrepretation!!! I have nothing bad to say about Model 1 with the exception of their customer service attitude. They seem to be a bit surly on the phone. Also the times they have given me for delivery are very different than what actually happens. It will ship tomorrow some how turns into next week in actuality. I've only ordered bit pieces from them however. If you are interested in 6.8 please IM me before buying a barrel. There have been some issues with chrome barrels being under bore. |

Myself and DaBunny have every tool you could ever need for an AR build, You should find out who in your area has them, or you will be doing a long drive.
What R-32 said, and we can build it in a bar or restaurant without taking the parts out of the bag.
Road trips are just my game!
Thanks for all the help, info and offers! Shopping will resume post-LCR. |
You mean to tell me the MOD of the WA HTF on AR15.com doesn't even own an AR?? |
They'll let just about *anyone* work in this place. |
You guys are all welcome to meet here (about half way for all) and use his shop. I'm sure he has everything one could need to put together an AR. |
Phone Boy doesn't have one either nor does he come to shoots and we still let him play here. Come to think of it, why do you post here R-32? |
LMAO! Hey I used to have one.... does that count? I sold it, after deciding I wanted a different configuration, and have been slow about replaceing it. Better late than never.... right? I had considered mentioning ~ earlier, but then I remembered that I wouldn't need to. Surely someone would be along to do it for me.... and they did. |
Anyone ever see 1Gunrunner shoot an AR15? |
?????Now that you mention it???? Can't say I have. Pretty sure I've seen him holding one tho. |
Swear to God I saw him shoot a whole mag last year. Most impressive |
KA3B,You guys didn't get him to shoot with you when he was up there? What's up with that?
I just had one built this weekend by Iblis. I would highly reccomend deciding on what you would like. Then visit him at the Puyallup Gun Show (hes not going to be there Feb). You can pick the components al-la carte.
Heres the link to the thread where I asked for help. Pictures included. Help building $700 AR15 |
I dont have any intel on that. I was too busy parting with money and drueling on the new AR when I saw him. Sorry, forgot to ask. |
Im the youngest, and best looking? |

Look in the Washington State EE forum. Someone there was selling some Rock River ArmsNM 2 Stage Triggers for $80 bucks. If they'e no longer available go to www.triplebreakproducts.com and look up Rock River Arms in the product menu and you will see the same triggers there for $95 wich is still a good deal. I'm using RRA 2 stage triggers in both of my AR's and I swear by them. They will improve your shooting by 100%. |

If you only had a midlength float tube instead of that carbine length

Oh, Please!!!! Talk about whipped cream on a hot dog. |
Looks like it's missing an upper receiver, bolt carrier group, charging handle, bare lower with parts kit, fire control group, 16" lightweight barrel, front sight / gas block and rear sight, flash hider, and for optics, some nice mounts.

The prices and features from Model 1 Sales look good, from my noob POV, but they are a lot like what I can pay/get from Olympic Arms, and Oly is a more local company. I beleive that the recomendations wouldn't be here for M1Sales if they didn't have a good rep, but how do they differ from Oly? I don't want to find out 5 years down the line that the value of the thing has taken a huge nosedive with their quality reputation.
TIA, folks. |
