 O xein angellein Lakedaimoniois hoti tede keimetha tois keinon rhemasi peithomenoi I know the commonly held version but can you give insight to the actual words since there is one large flaw with: "Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here obedient to her laws we lie." besides being a little too poetic.

The reclining messengers lay peoples willingly,(glad to do it) repose in the grave as we are, and made the continuing pledge obedience.
thats as close as i can get with the lexicons i have, some of the letters and words are obsolete and it would be in error to give more modern definitions, thats why T. Jefferson and J. Adams collected greek manuscripts in hopes of gaining definition by usage in a sentence, a concordant translations if you will. |
