Merry Christmas everybody.

I'd really like to paint my 10.5 pistol, man it sticks out like a sore thumb in the mountains and desert. Up here by Prescott there's pine forest, scrub desert, and grassland. I was hoping to kind of split the difference, and figure out a way to paint it that it'll blend in better in the varied terrain.

If anybody has any camo patterns in mind, or recommended spray bomb colors, techniques, or pictures of what worked for you, I'd appreciate your input.

Anything but black would help, a little desert sand, a little pine tree green, a little dirt/wood tone.

in the olden days I used bowflage on a Colt,   no real pattern, jst random OD/tan.   Constantly moving thru creosote and other brush along the border broke up the paint enough to provide an excellent worn pattern.   The bowflage was also not IR reflective like krylon.

I did this a few years ago,  Based on some Rhodesian camo I have, changed the colors to better suit my neighborhood.

Pick colors you want
Throw grass and leaves on rifle. Paint.
Throw more grass and leaves on rifle in different spots.  Paint different color
Repeat.

Breaking up the lines is more important than the color.  I just usually do tan Olive and brown. More tan if it's for a lighter environment. More olive and brown if it's a darker environment

Even in the forested areas, tan to coyote brown colors are best as the base. Use green sparingly. Black sticks out like a sore thumb, so cover as much as you can.

Very nice job.  That looks great.

Step 1.

Step 2. I found that it works best if you use latex gloves and press the grass/leaves tightly against the gun before spraying the top colors. The edges will be too diffuse if you just loosely pile the debris on top of the gun and spray through it.

Step 3.

Citri-Strip.

The addition of the vegetation looks great up close, but it won't make much difference further away.

I have done Gun Skins - there is a lot to pick from.
A buddy and I did one of my carbines on a Saturday night.
It took about 6 hours.

I think it looks neat.  I like the way it came out.

Neat pattern. What's yer secret?

On the top one I bought some heat-resistant stencils from a guy online (they weren't....), sprayed a base coat, applied stencils, sprayed over them, applied more stencils, sprayed over those, applied more, and sprayed a final coat.  Four colors total.  Then I baked (KG Gunkoat) and peeled off the stencils.  I tried to keep the stencils overlapping as much as possible.

On the bottom one I laid out blue painter's tape overlapping on the side of an old ammo can, used an exacto-knife to cut out random patterns, and then sprayed two or three base colors, and applied the stencils on the seams of those colors.  Then a final coat and peel.

Old video of mine using Aervoe.  It held up well.

The one in the above video ended up a little lighter than I liked, so I hit it with coyote again.

I ultimately ended up stripping all the paint off.  If you are into changing optics and moving things around, don’t paint.  These rifle components are on three different guns now.

Thanks for the help guys.

While I've been researching camo and camo technique (and working up the nerve to paint my gun), I got a Holosun red dot. The only problem, is after installing it, I figured out i have a canted front sight base. So now my upper has to go back.

I did see a camo that I think I will try to imitate the colors/pattern of. Realtree max 1. Here's a jacket in that pattern.

I've use quite a few strippers, and that is a good one. If you are sensitized to solvents like me (been a painter since 95), this stuff is very mild and shouldn't make you sick.

I wouldn't adhere to closely to the pattern, but that color palette would be great for most of the Southwest- basically anything outside alpine forest.

I painted mine desert tan.  It looked more like a toy than a rifle, almost fake.  Then I lost it.

Actually I sold that one.
