Phoenix police arrested two suspects Tuesday night on suspicion of shooting at two officers in a marked patrol car, police said.
At about 10:40 p.m., one suspect in a Maroon Chevrolet Tahoe shot at two officers near 35th Avenue and Culver Street, striking the hood and roof of their patrol car, Detective Stacie Derge said in a statement.
The suspects, Ricardo Hurtado, 24, and Juan Beltran Nunez, 29, then fled the scene to an apartment complex near the 4300 block of North 53rd Avenue, Derge said. Neither of the police officers was injured by the gunfire, she said.
Police pursued the suspects, and the men abandoned their vehicle in the parking lot of the apartment complex, Derge said. Patrol officers then set up a perimeter in the area, and Special Assignments Unit officers and K-9 officers responded to the scene to search for the suspects, she said.
Both men were taken into custody, and one man sustained a bite from a K-9, Derge said. The men initially gave fake names and ages to police after being arrested, Derge said. Police also recovered the Tahoe and a rifle.
Nunez was booked on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault, possession of dangerous drugs, unlawful flight and prohibited possession of a weapon. Hurtado was booked on suspicion of prohibited possession of a weapon. Both men had a hold placed on them for Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
