Actually, it's about a week old, but Embarq took their damned sweet time hooking up my internet.

Right now it's a bone-stock Remington 700 Police. I need to figure out something to put on top of it. And maybe under it. And through it. And I've got to do it all kinda on the cheap, since I'm now officially a broke college student again...

Hrm...

Any suggestions? I know the concept of "on the cheap" is kinda offensive to a fine weapon like this, but it's the only means available to me right now. I can always upgrade once I get money.

nice.  how about a harris swivel bipod, Badger 20MOA scope base, Badger 30mm Rings and a 10 or 16X Super Sniper Scope.  That should punch some holes at 600+ yards if you do your part.

Nice stick. If you're on a budget just shoot off a ruck instead of a bipod until you have enough for one. The SS scope in 10x as mentioned above is great for the money and Look up SeekinsPrecision.com for great rings and Base. Excellent price too. What part of FL are you in? I have the same 700P with the above mentioned config. Did yours come with the old or new trigger?

Goodluck,

Yikes. $150 for a scope mount? I suppose this is one of those things that you get what you pay for, but still... $150 is a lot of coin for a single piece of metal... I could probably machine one myself for less than $50...

Hm... Now that I mention it... Anyone got one of these bases and a set of calipers and/or other precision measuring tools?

Remember, when you're getting into this kind of equipment, spending more on scope and mounts than the rifle itself is expected. That's why I don't have one.

Yeah, I figured as much. I've got no trouble spending money on quality. (As long as I *HAVE* money, that is) It's just the thought of spending $150 on a piece of machined steel/aluminum that kinda irks me, especially when I've got access to machine tools and such.

Well, crap. Apparently the friend of mine who's got a CNC toolset went a broke it. Don't ask me how.

So I guess I'll have to suck it up and buy parts. (The horror...) So, any suggestions as to best places to procure the various items? Obviously I'm gonna be getting the SS scope from SWFA, since they're the people who... Um, build it? Well, distribute it, anyways. They've got the Badger components too, and there's a certain draw to having everything arrive in the same box. But if it's super-cheaper elsewhere, I'll look into it.

On a side note, I'm still stuck on the idea of turning out components when my friend gets his tools up and running again. Besides scope mounts, are there any other bits and bobs that people think are overpriced? Or might be interested in getting custom made? Gotta work out my industrious side.

Yep.

Just don't go cheap on the base and rings. I'll take a pics of my aluminum base tomorrow, you'd be surprised to see what it looked like after 100 rounds.

Mine had a Ken Farrell base, IOR quick detach rings, and a 16x Super Sniper.
And I did a trigger job.

I drooled over an AICS for a bit. Then I looked at the price tag and felt a sharp burning sensation in my wallet as my credit cards cried out in horror and spontaneously combusted...

But damn, that is a nice rig.

Alrighty then. My desire to actually USE my new toy has overridden my stinginess, so I've ordered the parts. Now, seeing as I've never really done this before, is there anything that I should know about mounting the stuff?

I have had a 308 and 223 PSS since '98 and they still shoot like the day I got them. The 308 is at presant being converted to take M14 mags.

Alrighty then. Like I mentioned before, the scope et all are on their way. Ended up ordering the SS 16x, the badger one-piece (Short Action) 20MOA base, with a set of badger medium-height 30mm rings. Got a Harris 6-9" swiveling bipod and a cheapo tasco spotting scope in the mix as well.

Hopefully all the parts arrive intact, and are all correct.

My next question: How hard is it to replace the stock on a 700? With, oh, say, an AICS? I realized that, having just spent $800 on various bits and bobs, spending $775 (Plus Shipping) for a AICS 1.5 isn't really that much of a stretch. Plus I got more financial aid than I expected, so I've got some cash.

Man, I've got it bad... I haven't even fired the thing yet, and and I'm already hooked.

Anyone got any suggestions for ammo? Bearing in mind that I'm gonna need a lot of practice, and thus quantity is more important than quality, to start off...

Color me decidedly unhappy. I just got an email from SWFA that my stuff was backordered. Now, I have my doubts that it's ALL backordered, but I guess they're one of those companies that won't ship piecemeal. Bah. That's what I get for ordering it all from one place.

Then again, there really isn't anywhere else to get the SS scope, is there. Bah.
