Looking to get a decent Mil-dot scope for the m1a.  The longest range i would attempt  shoot at would be up to 500yds (at deer).  What power should i look at and what is a decently priced scope?

Thanks

Super Sniper 10X.  You can find these used for $250 +-.  Awesome scopes.

I am quite happy with my Bushnell Elite 3200, 10X w/ mildot. (under $200)

Longest range is 150yds at my club, and its mounted on a Savage 10FP in .223.

Good luck,

+1 - good scope for the money if you don't want a variable scope.

500 yds at a deer?

Pardon me for asking, but is that considered sportsmanlike?

Scope or no, I would think 200-250 yds max for a sure, clean, 1-shot kill.

Maybe you don't need mil-dots for the range bracket you mentioned.

Consider the Burris Fullfield with BallisticPlex reticle.  It has reticular hold-overs out to 500 yds, and is quicker than mil-dots.

Cheaper than the SS, and at least as good quality.

well, i am hoping for them to get closer... but from what ive been told where i will be hunting at the shots can get up to that far away.  I doubt i would be taking any shots at a deer that for since i am an inexperienced deer hunter and would prefer a closer shot to ensure a quick clean kill.  However, i would like to have a scope that would give me decent magnification out to 500 yrds incase i wanna do some marksmaship practice.

you dont need a scope for that distance......i have been shooting iron sights out to 500 yards since the 80s.....both 223 and 308 with magic numbers.........its all in the practice.....however, artificial help is awlays good.

It's only unsportsmanlike if you're an average shooter that can barely hit a 100 yd target with a rifle he rarely shoots. That's about 90% of hunters.

I would think a 500 yd shot would be a long one in RI considering how small the state is.

Can you even find enough open space in RI to take a 500 yard shot?

Its sad, but you're right on the money about 90% of hunters not being able to hit anything at 100yrds.
